Sharp Fightin Luzon As U S Forces Hold Ground At San Jacinto

The Thirty third infantry fought one of the war’s sharpest two hour clashes five miles from San Jacinto. One officer and six men killed plus one officer and twelve men wounded. Americans captured twenty nine Filipinos and 100 rifles. Roads were treacherous and mud filled as Gatling gun crews struggled forward.

Americans rout Filipino force at San Fabian with heavy losses

A mile long skirmish line pressed the enemy as Major Marsh flanked a trench, killing most insurgents and seizing a convent flag. Gatling fire drove 150 Filipinos into the hills. outposts killed five. Reports claim Aguinaldo retires toward Dagupan while Wheaton and Young miss junctions due to roads.

Grounding of US cruiser Charleston off Kamuguin Island

Manila reports the cruiser Charleston struck an uncharted coral reef ten miles east of Kamuguin Island. The stern submerged, bow barely above water as heavy seas rolled the ship. Crew abandoned ship in launches with two Colt guns and 134 rifles, two hours after impact.

Island Landing Near Kamiguin Encounters Curious Natives

A small island with barren rocks is the scene of a landing at Kamiguin after boats were dipped in the water. The Charleston's crew found the local people curious rather than hostile. Lieutenant MacDonald set out for help in a sailing craft and was picked up by the transport Aztec. The Charleston remains exposed at sea with no hope of salvage.

Glover gifts inscriptions to the University of Michigan

Henry P. Glover of Ypsilanti Mich presents to the University of Michigan a large collection from Pozzuoli near Naples Italy. The archive includes over 250 inscriptions on marble and other materials dating from Augustus to the fifth century A D. Professor Walter Dennison of Oberlin helped publish part of the inscriptions.

Died at the Front Leading His Men on the Charge

John A. Logan Jr. was killed while leading his battalion in the San Jacinto charge against Filipino forces in Luzon. The president sent a personal telegram to his wife in Youngstown, Ohio, expressing heartfelt sympathy and noting his heroic service and place among war heroes. Logan, born July 24, 1860, in Carbondale Illinois, followed his father’s military footsteps, attended West Point briefly, then pursued business before joining the army for the Spanish American War. He served in Cuba and, recently assigned to the Philippines, left a wife Edith Andrews and two children.

Ada Till Arrested in Aurora for Mother-in-law Murder

Ada Till of Aurora was arrested by DuPage County sheriff on murder charges in the case of her mother-in-law Mrs. Elize Hill who died from burns two weeks after reports that kerosene or a corrosive liquid was poured on her back. Hill had named Till as the killer before her death. Till's husband Thomas is cited with an estate worth $40,000 to be divided among their children.

Molders Strike Settled at Deere & Co After Four Months

Moline November 15. The Deere & Manvers company and Deere & Co molders end a four month strike for a ten percent raise. About 400 workers at the first company returned to work while 500 Deere & Co. men had been striking over foreign castings. Settlement reached at Detroit in a joint conference of union and association leaders.

Miners Strike in Iowa Over Wapello Coalspike

Ottumwa reports Wapello Coal Co pit miners at Hiteman walked out for a 10 cent raise beyond 1.90 dollars. All miners idle as strike spreads across the site. In Cedar Rapids a Williamsburg clothing store burglary with goods valued around 50 dollars prompted two arrests. Columbus Junction beat Washington 10 to 5 in a football game this afternoon.

Yesterday afternoon at the J T Anderson home on South Lawa Street Mrs J T Anderson and Mrs Archie Mc Culley entertained about one hundred lady friends at a Thimble Bee. The home was prettily decorated and a luncheon was served. The same hostesses entertain another large company this afternoon.

Improvement at St Joseph plans a western resort

In St Joseph Michigan on November 15 Chief Engineers Kittridge and Moore and General Manager Schaff of the Big Four railroad met with Mayor Church and local capitalists to discuss a $300000 resort project. They propose a hotel near the former Hotel St Joseph site, a lakefront extension, a union station and docks, and a re built wagon bridge with government aid, followed by a two mile north lakefront improvement and a large summer garden.
