A early season snowstorm blanketed Iowa with up to eight inches in spots causing school cancellations and traffic tieups. Des Moines logged seven inches as northwest winds whip drifting snow and road hazards persist.
In San Diego 123 black sailors who refused to return to duty aboard the USS Constellation were largely discharged or disciplined as Captain McKenzie led proceedings. Two men arrested for marijuana possession were discharged earlier the same day, with others fined demoted or assigned extra duties as the ship paused training and port calls.
A major storm system unleashed blizzard snows and tornadoes from the Great Lakes to Texas, killing at least seven and injuring dozens. A Nebraska mother was electrocuted by a downed power line in Fairbury, while a Texas Gulf coast tornadoes caused fatalities and damage near Port Arthur. Weather offices logged widespread snow, rain, and high winds with road closures and airfield disruptions across the region.
Washington County woke to two to three inches of snow in the first snowstorm of winter. Roads were cautious but clear by mid morning and traffic moved freely. The brief snow, followed by scarce sunshine, unsettled harvest still underway for corn and beans.
Former Argentine dictator Juan D. Peron flew to Rome with Isabel and Lopez Rega aboard Marcel Dassault’s jet seeking a private audience with Pope Paul VI before a planned two day stay. Security was tight as Peronists hailed him, with a Rome exit for Buenos Aires set on Thursday night.
Public Works Director Rex Mathews says 1000 to 1500 rats migrating through Davenport pose no immediate health danger as officials place poisoned food in sewers and catch basins. Residents are urged to keep pets inside and children away from bait while authorities monitor the situation amid Mississippi floodwaters and dump closures.
UPI reports Sen. George McGovern urged delaying any move to oust Jean Westwood as Democratic national chairman until after year’s first. Five Democratic governors pressed for her resignation, citing election defeat, while McGovern plans consults with leaders before deciding and may seek a reconciliatory path.
Richard Combs 24 of Cedar Falls surrendered to a farmer near Winfield after stabbing guard Marshall Miller during a prison car escape from Fort Madison. John Lynch 31 gave himself up at a Columbus City service station. Charles Martin 36 of Des Moines remained at large. Miller and two other inmates were returned to custody. Martin deemed dangerous may still be armed. Authorities noted security precautions were followed. In a separate matter, the Cow county supervisors canvassed last week’s general election results with Democrat Elmer Schneider losing by 35 votes pending possible recount.
