Boone police offer a reward for information as vandals deflate nearly 100 tires on parked cars downtown and vandalize a post office line, a dwelling, and a schoolhouse window. Chief James Reid links the acts to a Halloween water-dousing prank by the same group. High school youths are suspected.
Two major earthquakes hit Los Angeles area causing widespread destruction in Torrance and Gardena. Police say hundreds of small buildings and a large oil storage tank were wrecked, gas and water mains broken, cars crushed, and much of the business district left in ruins with no deaths or serious injuries reported.
The Iowa health department notes syphilis reporting fell about 3 percent since the 1947 campaign. Ten months of 1937 tallied 3,027 cases, the highest on record. for the same period in 1938 there were 2,030 new cases. Dr. R M Sorensen credits newspapers radio civic groups schools and churches for the reduction. He adds the hush hush era is over and facts are being faced.
Sixty Iowa police chiefs and sheriffs attended a two day FBI led training school in Des Moines at Hotel Savery. FBI special agent D K Brown said officers are cogs in civilian defense and emphasized volunteers and the public must know what to do since police cannot be everywhere during air raids.
Clarksville Justice A C Harre fines Story county Attorney Frank Lounsberry 19 dollars for carrying an assembled gun in his car during pheasant season. Bow man of Osceola and George Sylvester of Nevada also plead guilty and fined 10 dollars each. In ten days 19 men were fined in Butler county for carrying assembled guns in cars.
Jane Wacker of Garner pleaded guilty to violating postal laws for writing scurrilous and defamatory statements about President Roosevelt and other national leaders on a postcard. Federal Judge George C. Scott placed her on two years probation.
Sioux City resident Raymond J. Mohler aged 53 escaped total blindness after a hunting incident left his left eye injured. Doctors said the right eye, hit by shotgun pellets on Wednesday, might be saved. Mohler and a hunting companion faced across a ravine on the Fred Emich farm, about 25 miles north of Sioux City. Mohler previously suffered poor vision in the first eye for 44 years.
A district court jury in Oskaloosa found William Wild Bill Henderson a 28 year old Negro boxer guilty of larceny after a one day trial. He was accused of stealing seven diamond rings and a wedding ring from Collins Jewelry where he worked as a janitor. Sentence set for Nov 24. Henderson was arrested in Des Moines after a call offered a reward for locating the rings.
At an Iowa Fruit Growers meeting Prof. H L Lantz of Iowa State College said the out of season freeze of 1940 was a rare event and not to fear repetition. He urged planting four or more varieties alongside Jonathon and recommended Red Delicious Golden Delicious and Grimes for pollination and diversification. He noted past growers prospered and that proper variety choice and soil management can keep the business profitable despite risks.
City hall announced the assessment schedule for Washington street surfacing is nearly complete and will be ready early next week. About 400 properties are affected by the 1941 improvement and payments can be made to city clerk W. H. Fulton. Street officials plan to finish grading and mud removal of incomplete sections and spread delivered rock this winter, with an asphalt top coat planned for next year to complete the project.
Elementary schools Lincoln and Stewart held evening programs for parents and friends with students from third to sixth grade presenting on Health and Foods. Stewart featured Mildred Riepe and Harrison guiding with songs and graphs, while Lincoln had sessions led by Sheila Ross and Jo ann Krabill focusing on American Education Week and Indians and Pilgrims. Virginia Campbell and several pupils read original stories as the Southeast town project progresses.
George E. Whitacre 68 of Booneville Arkansas died at his home. He moved from Brighton about 12 years ago with his family. Born June 14 1873 he was a Spanish War veteran and husband of Carrie Humphreys. Survived by one brother R J Whitacre and his wife. Funeral plans await arrival of the body at Fairfield.
In Washington on November 14 President Roosevelt won an agreement to continue operation of the nation s captive coal mines while negotiations between the United Mine Workers union and steel company owners proceed.
The fire department was summoned yesterday evening to the Carl Kelley home at 920 North Fifth Avenue as a precaution after an oil heater overheated. No damage occurred.
The third grade program featured poems such as Indian Cradle and Indian Children read by students Marilyn Miller Marilyn Fern and Nancy Barden and Lee Goodlancer. A dramatization Eyes That See and songs Thanksgiving Day and The First Thanksgiving highlighted the event with performances by Gary Gorham Jimmy Lloyd and others. Guides in the building included Jack Tanner Bruce Taylor Ruth Barlow and Maynard Goff as curtain handlers and volunteers assisted by John Collett Dale Fritz.
The Washington Concert League faces cancellation of its 1941 42 winter series after raising only about 104 of the required funds. With a week left and needing 150 more, 100 new members or 50 couples could secure Percy Grainger and two other top concerts for the city. Volunteer organizers urge interest in joining before the November 22 deadline.
Funeral services for G. L. Fetters, who died yesterday afternoon, will be held Saturday at two o'clock at the L. A. Jones Funeral Home. Rev. Ivan Riess of the Church of Christ will officiate, assisted by Rev. Vernon Carter of Marion, former local pastor.
The Older Boys and Girls conference in Washington hosts a program on Tuesday November 18 at the Presbyterian church with theme Christ in a Changing World. Registration begins at 9:30 and speakers include Rev George Kerr C G Herbrecht and others guiding discussions on Christian leadership and personal life. A fellowship banquet at 6 pm features Eugene Dunlap as toastmaster.
Charles Stevens, 96, enjoyed pheasant hunting when his granddaughter Thelma Stevens flew from Des Moines to take him on a plane ride. Stevens is noted for turning the first furrow in Cherokee County in 1869.
Federal Judge George C. Scott directed a verdict for Armour & Co. in a $26,567 breach of contract case brought by Walter Eggers of Mason City. Eggers, injured in a 1928 plant accident, claimed a January contract offered lifetime light work at 25 dollars weekly, but he was discharged in December. The company said any contract was unauthorized.
The notice indicates a burial will occur at Elm Grove cemetery following a church service.
Six of Iowa’s nine members voted against Senate amendments to a neutrality repeal allowing armed ships to carry cargoes through war zones. The amendments passed 18 to 12. Voters included Republicans Martin Talle Gwynne Gilchrist Jenser and Harrington opposing. Cunningham LeCompte and Jacobsen voting for. ninth member did not vote. Midwest peers mostly opposed as Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan show varied tallies.
British admiralty announced HMS Ark Royal has been sunk in the Mediterranean after torpedo damage while in tow. The carrier, long a propaganda target, was reportedly not in action at the moment of attack and many crew and air personnel were saved. Next of kin are being informed.
Treasury Secretary Morgenthau told a special economy committee that drastic reductions in non defense spending are needed. He proposed canceling the $139 million authorization to apportion for highway construction in the 1944 fiscal year and urged a future road plan with no specific sum.

President Roosevelt announced that the United States would withdraw Marines from Peiping Tientsin and Shanghai in China. The withdrawal was expected to begin soon, with the armed forces on land in China already limited in protection of American interests.
A proposal suggests merging the Civilian Conservation Corps and the National Youth Administration into a new bureau of defense training to slash expenditures for reclamation projects river and harbor work flood control commodity credit corporation and for the rural electrification administration.
