Madrid, Nov. 14. Rioting erupted as mounted police charged a crowd of about 49 000 during a funeral procession for workers killed in a building collapse. One person died and 21 were injured as bullets and stones flew while police and civil guards tried to disperse the crowd.
We wish to thank friends and neighbors and the hospital nurses for their kindness during the illness and death of our darling baby and brother Mr and Mrs Henry Miller Mercedes and Marion. Glenn Gordon, son of Mr and Mrs Lee Gordon, is seriously ill with pneumonia at his home two miles south of West Chester.

Harold Davis of Davenport and Dewey Bridges of Springfield were captured in Lancaster Missouri while attempting to rob a filling station. The pair earlier burglarized the Stewart hardware store, stole cars, and faced burglary and robbery charges in Iowa and possible Dyer Act charges federally. Authorities in Missouri refuse to release them to Iowa counties.
The Public Library will observe Book Week from November 16 to 22 with daily reviews of popular books. Lectures will be delivered at one o clock each afternoon Monday through Saturday by Mrs Brinton, Mrs Eicher, John Marsh, Miss Milligan, Miss Jeffrey, Mrs McLanghlin, and Miss Wilson. Eva Denny describes plans for displays of new books and Christmas suggestions.
In Crawfordsville on November 11, nearly 400 joined the Red Cross. At noon the roll call reported 895.95, with Washington county’s $800 quota yet to be surpassed. The convention drew about 10 000 delegates and was described as the largest teachers meeting in a decade. A separate committee study examined football advantages and handicaps for high school teams as part of reorganizing the association to simplify its operations.
Washington county recorder Mrs Belle Rice reports 1420 hunting licenses issued as pheasant season nears its close. Many hunters travel north for the final days while licenses valid across the state draw more purchases. Seventy two trapping licenses have been issued this season and most trappers plan to wait for colder weather.
August Rol off, a Lumberjack who worked in local logging camps for three years before his death, bequeaths 1600 dollars to the American Legion memorial library of Mellen.
Havana reports martial law ending as seven people died and at least 251 were wounded in yesterday’s student clashes. Stores closed during the turmoil and cavalry patrolled main streets while police stood at stations. Senator Alberto Tharreras was named to investigate the student problem.
A delegation of eight to twelve Washington high school boys will attend the state conference for older boys on November 28 to 30 at Clinton. Supt J Hy Peet and Legh Soule will lead the delegation with Rev Stoddard Lane of Plymouth Congregational church as principal speaker. Sessions occur at the First Presbyterian church with Soule on the conference committee.
Mayor John Applegate of Washington became one of the first to join the Washington county Red Cross roll call. His receipt card was presented by Will Jones as a proclamation urged citizens to enroll, noting the national Red Cross disaster relief role and urging generous support. The 19th Century era meet is set for Saturday at 2:15 p.m. with Mrs. Orville Elder.
