Constance Maring, 64, of Marengo was killed when her bicycle was struck by a semi on US 6 at the south edge of Marengo. The driver, Lawrence Huber of Solon, was not charged.
A UPI report states Aubran W. Buddy Martin was found guilty of first degree murder in the killings of United Mine Worker Leader Joseph A. Yablonski his wife and daughter. The jury deliberated under two hours and the panel will decide sentencing. Martin 23 of Cleveland testified in his own defense and planned to appeal. He was the first of five suspects to be tried for the murders.
Ronald Zufell, 19, of Estherville Iowa, died in a Rochester hospital from brain damage after a September 26 fight in the Estherville High School parking lot. He had fallen and hit his head, was treated and released, then readmitted and transferred as injuries worsened. No charges were filed.
John Burton Bernard 33 of Clear Lake was arrested on murder charges in the shooting death of Ronald Eugene Hayes 30. Hayes was found on the steps of his estranged wife’s home, shot in the head with a .38 revolver. Bernard was arraigned and held on a $50 bond with a preliminary hearing set for Tuesday.
Scattered showers or thundershowers move across the state tonight into Sunday east. Turning cooler west tonight with lows from the mid 30s northwest to mid 40s southeast. Clouds decrease and cooler Sunday with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s from northwest to southeast.
President Nixon ordered a speedup in U S troop withdrawals, planning to remove 45 000 more men in December and January while warning a residual force may stay in Indochina until a negotiated settlement. He expressed no public optimism about POW releases and warned against an indefinite American commitment.
The State Board of Regents voted seven to one to establish a quota admissions plan at the University of Iowa College of Education. Dean Howard R. Jones cited rising enrollment, limited faculty, and a national decline in teacher demand as reasons. Applicants will be screened next spring by committee and admitted based on aptitude test scores grades and motivation to teach.
A masked hijacker carrying over 40 pounds of dynamite and a shotgun seized a Calgary to Montreal Air Canada flight with 123 aboard. After ransom and a string of border crossings, a crewman used a fire ax at 3,000 feet, knocking him unconscious as the plane returned to Great Falls. The hijacker initially demanded 1.5 million dollars for Ireland, but the incident ended with the passengers freed and the hijacker subdued.

Local actors staged Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid at the high school last night with a rousing, audience-pleasing performance. Steve Coon and Melinda Pacha led, supported by a cast including Gloria Zuehike, Jeff Boshart, Pam McClure, Kathy Tuttle, and others.
Ed Smith, president of the North Dakota Farmers Union, warned Nixon could lose a second term if farm voters turn away. He said Farm Belt support is essential, criticized corporate takeover of farming, and noted the administration backs legislation opposed by many farm groups.
Prisoners at the Wisconsin State Reformatory in Green Bay erupted in a violent outbreak Friday, using acetylene torches to cut bars, setting fires, and smashing windows in the 400 man institution. No deaths or serious injuries were reported. Warden Donald L. Quatsoe said guards fired over the prisoners and the disturbance was quelled within two hours, with order restored by about 9:30 PM.
