About 1,000 visitors toured the Washington Community School District’s new junior high during open house and dedication ceremonies marking National Education Week. W. Dale Chismore praised education funding while Harlan Neuhart stressed the facility as a solid investment for the community.
Chancellor Adenauer flies to Washington for post Cuban talks with President Kennedy on Berlin defense plans. The Spiegel affair fuels German opposition calls for Defense Minister Straus's dismissal as Parliament set to debate Dec 5. Adenauer to discuss Western contingency plans and immediate Allied military assistance with Kennedy.
Oxford Mississippi UPI report says Circuit Judge W M O Barr told Lafayette County grand jury to indict President Kennedy and his brother Robert if they were responsible for the two deaths in the Mississippi riot sparked by James Meredith’s admission to the University. The judge also banned evidence from military searches as unconstitutional while detailing items found by soldiers in dorm rooms. Meredith entered his eighth week of classes as federal marshals and soldiers continue escort duty.
Volunteer workers in the Washington Community Chest drive report slow progress toward the 1962 goal. With $12,277.73 pledged of $27,550, many business area workers have not yet reported while residential reports lag earlier but are improving. Co chairmen Robert Bates and Ron Goff urge complete calls and speedy reporting before the campaign kickoff. Reserve funds to cover deficits are exhausted.
Iowans are invited to help University Hospitals in Iowa City make Christmas special for patients. Assistant superintendent Charles Ingersoll urged gifts for children and adults spending Christmas in confinement, listing toys knitting materials bill folds leather kits gloves toilet articles shawls books scarves hose pipes tobacco stationary and stamps as suitable items.
Washington High School seniors stage A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court a three act comedy this Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. Tickets are sold by seniors and may be exchanged for reserved seats at Phillips Drug Store. Directed by Daryl Schultz.
Washington county stockmen and farm youths are among exhibitors listed for the 1962 International Live Stock Exposition in Chicago November 23 to December 1 at the International Amphitheatre. Entrants include Don Dale and Vaughn Rinner and George Kiefer in junior steer classes, plus hog exhibitors Bob Greene Connie Greene and William S Norman. The event offers 130000 dollars in prizes across 37 breeds, with Arthur Godfrey appearing with Palomino Goldie at 14 horse shows during the nine day run.
United Nations Acting Secretary General Thant summoned top Soviet and Cuban envoys as talks on Red Cross inspection of inbound Cuban cargoes reach a critical stage. Ruegger reported progress after meetings with Thant and representatives from the United States, USSR, and Cuba. If no agreement is reached, the U S Cuban quarantine on ships to Cuba may continue.

Detlev Mueller and Guenter Breuer describe East German work education camps near Berlin with 17 hour days brutal guards and starvation. They fled to West Berlin after escaping a camp near Gransee and say conditions included barbed wire high walls and executions by shooting.
Washington reports say the United States intensified demands for Russia to pull IL 28 bombers from Cuba to fulfill the Khrushchev Kennedy withdrawal pact. Kennedy may withhold assurances against invasion while bombers remain, amid other Cuba developments and talks with UN officials.
Soviet leader Anastas Mikoyan backed Fidel Castro's demand for U S withdrawal from Guantanamo as part of a Caribbean peace program. He praised Castro's five points and declared Soviet-Cuban friendship while offering no timing on missile differences or Castro's departure.
A farm south of Riverside is quarantined by the State Veterinarian over suspected hog cholera. Jim Frier notes this is the fifth quarantine in Washington County since January 1. Farmers should vaccinate unvaccinated hogs and follow sanitation, isolation, and movement controls.
Extension Council elections take place this week in four Washington County townships. Dutch Creek November 13 at Cliff Conklin home, Brighton November 14 at Robison Feed Store, Iowa November 14 at Riverside Community Building, Lime Creek November 15 at Wellman Methodist Church. Voters may elect members for a second term. last two meetings occur November 19 and 20 in Clay and Washington townships.
The Washington County Board of Supervisors completed their unofficial canvass of general election votes over the past weekend. All precinct books were checked for errors, with only minor discrepancies uncovered.
Washington High School hosts an evening open house from 7 30 to 9 p m inviting all interested residents. Teachers will meet parents in their rooms and student council members will guide visitors through the building. New facilities include industrial arts, science labs and updated classrooms. Coffee and cookies available in the old gym. National Education Week observance continues with open houses at Lincoln and Stewart elementary schools. Lincoln families asked to bring a dozen cupcakes.
Members of the Leon Beatty American Legion Post and its auxiliary held their Veterans Day turkey banquet in the Legion rooms at city hall on Monday. More than 100 people attended the event, with Don Johnson of West Branch delivering the evening talk as a candidate for national Legion Commander.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions through tonight with warmer southeast winds. Tonight lows in the 30s and Wednesday highs in the 60s as the day turns partly cloudy and warmer. Thursday outlook remains mostly cloudy and cooler.
