Union Pacific says a formal investigation will determine the San Francisco’s speed as it plowed into a trailing streamliner near Swanston Wyoming. Rescue work faced extreme cold as 16 bodies were recovered and 49 injured, with fireman John Branstitter as sole survivor in the diesel cab.
In Panmunjom Korea the United Nations rejected a Communist call for an immediate cease-fire. The UN said acceptance could delay prisoner releases and refused to end fighting until war prisoners and a truce framework are secured. A five-hour joint subcommittee meeting followed with plans to resume at 11 a.m. next day.
Norbert Norris Bob Boileau and Charles Crull escaped a likely tragedy when their boat overturned Monday at Lake Odessa. Quick rescue by Maynard Brown and Hubert Wilson who witnessed the accident from nearby shore saved the three stranded hunters.

Stewart hosts a 7 to 8 oclock event with a pre program Families First, Lincoln presents fourth grade student showcases and a talk by Russell Bannister, then tours of classrooms follow. Next Monday junior high hosts a supper and program starting at 6 30 with instrumental and choral numbers before a classroom tour.
Members of the Washington Ministerial Association announced plans for a community prayer service at the Methodist church Thursday morning at 9 15. The service coincides with the hearing on the East Washington beer permit issue at the courthouse at 10 o'clock that morning.
Knixists of Pythias and Pythian Sisters hold a special meeting at the K. P. hall tonight at 7 30 oclock. Members are asked to bring food donations for an adopted family.

George J. Norman Dies at 85 in Washington County Hospital. Funeral Wednesday at Sherman's Funeral Home with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Born June 3, 1868 in St. John Missouri, he lived in Washington since 1950 and worked for the Milwaukee railroad for 30 years. He is survived by wife Sally, son Don, grandkids, great grandchildren, and a sister.
In Paris the United Nations General Assembly rejected a Soviet bid to seat Red China. Dean Acheson urged against seating the Communists, saying Red China's conduct fell far below acceptable norms. Russia suffered multiple defeats as China Germany and Yugoslavia were blocked from key UN actions.

Funeral services for Mrs Amanda Mangold will be held Thursday at 1:39 oclock afternoon at Snerman funeral home conducted by Rev KH Sk Janey. Interment will be in Kim Grove cemetery. Mrs Mangold, 68, died at her home Monday morning.
Dale W. Ayerson Wellman was arrested Sunday evening by the highway patrol and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
