Iowa City Herrman Wiegand, University of Iowa glass blower, plans a side project to craft glass instruments. He has a bugle a hunting horn and a fife and hopes within two years to field a fully equipped band. The bass drum worries him as he works on this unique pursuit.
Dunlap Ralph Kline, employed by Rogers brothers near here, has harvested 150 bushels of corn per day for two weeks. He picks 45 bushels per acre and makes a single long row trip for a 650 bushel load. He eats four meals daily and works from dawn until elevator unloads the corn.
Ames reports the 1934 drought continues to cut butterfat production in Iowa cow testing associations. October average butterfat per cow was 19.7 lbs, down from 21.5 lbs in October last year, per the Iowa State College extension service.
Waterloo officials vote to post a sign stating no agents allowed at the Back Hawk county maintenance barn. Supervisor John Biller says agents taking men from work costs the county about $100 per month.
Fort Dodge report says the United States Chamber of Commerce poll questions were poorly framed and ambiguous. Directors of the local chamber deferred voting on the referendum trends pending committee findings.
Des Moines reports the Iowa Supreme Court affirmed Gus Flood a Clinton area farmer entitled to a $10,050 reward for recovering $100,500 stolen in the City National Bank robbery at Clinton on May 16, 1982. The ruling upheld the district court grant of 10 percent and found the national bank subject to state law.
District Judge Karl Peters considers adding a conspiracy to sell liquor charge to the indictment of Atty. Gen. Edward L. O'Connor in Sioux City. The Iowa attorney general already faces an indictment for alleged gambling conspiracy.
District Judge Homer A. Fuller ordered the Bardwell family from Lineville to Missouri after a state relief dispute. Mrs Bardwell and six children with her mother had lived across the Iowa Missouri line seeking aid from both states.

Mrs. Elsie Thompson of Sioux City was reelected president of the Iowa Hairdressers and Cosmetologists association at the annual convention. Cedar Rapids was awarded the 1936 meeting as eight hundred delegates attended.
J F T O Connor comptroller of the currency told the American Bankers Association that the industry has improved and that past failures due to poor management and overexpansion should not recur. He projected the next six months as the best in four years. President Roosevelt urged easy money for real estate and securities to aid recovery and suggested rates below six percent for real estate loans.
County Agent W. J. Rouda bush reports a survey to gauge Farm Bureau members desire to hear President Franklin D. Roosevelt speak at the American Farm Bureau Federation annual convention in Chicago on Monday December 9. Only once before has a sitting president made a special trip to address such a convention. Members seeking tickets should notify Rouda bush promptly.
Frank J Buckingham of Kansas City, a DeMolay founder, spoke at the Masonic temple during a district DeMolay meeting. He described visits to Ireland England Germany Austria and Italy, urging boys to learn from these nations to help keep the United States from adopting dictatorial rule.
Des Moines reports damp warm week slows corn husking and drying across Iowa as farmers cope with moisture and slow market activity. Charles D. Reed notes cloudy conditions with light showers or snow, but low temperatures reduced moulding on ears still on stalks.
Plans are under way for the 21st annual Washington Masonic lodge Thanksgiving dinner to be held a week earlier than usual on Thursday. Fred Bey, lodge master, appointed a committee led by Glenn Mace to sell tickets, which cost 50 cents, with tickets available at McDaniel drug store. The Eastern Star will serve a turkey dinner at 6:30 pm followed by a tyled lodge session at 8 pm featuring H J Thornton of Iowa City speaking on Thanksgiving.
John P. Castle of Pittsburgh pled guilty to being drunk after sustaining a dislocated shoulder resisting arrest. Judge Renee E. Bovee sentenced him to ten days in the county jail. He was treated at the county hospital and fingerprinted before arraignment. Sheriff H. M. Putnam investigates potential warrants for passing bad checks.
A World War I veteran arrested here expressed hope of becoming a patient at a veterans' hospital after his release from jail.
Rome reports Premier Benito Mussolini moving toward a full trade and financial embargo on nations cooperating with league penalties. Italy forbids exports of 42 commodities including corn rye barley and dried fruit as warning to league members. The northern Italian army advances in Ethiopia joining the Danakil column near Makale.
Keokuk presbytery youth attended a Winfield banquet endorsing the Iowa synod invitation for the national United Presbyterian young people's convention to meet at Ames in 1937. Speakers Moses M. Shaw and Homer B. Henderson spoke to about 120 attendees. a banquet followed.
Miss Melba Lillian Lewis age 4 2 died at 5 30 pm yesterday at Washington county hospital after an operation for an abscess She was born October 17 1918 in Ray mondsville Missouri and moved with her family to Iowa She was a graduate of West Chester high school class of 1933 and a Baptist church member Surviving are her parents four brothers and three sisters, all listed as living at home, plus siblings in Washington Des Moines and nearby towns
Washington county wheat growers must file applications by 6 p m Friday November 15 to join the 1936 39 wheat adjustment contract. County Agent Wm J Ronda bush notes applications may be made in his office and the County Wheat Allotment Committee will then prepare a listing sheet for the State Grain Board analysis.
Webb Miller reports from the Ethiopian front as Mussolini pushes toward Aduwa. He describes heat, rough trails, mule trains, and wounded Ethiopians and Italians in a field hospital, with bombers overhead and locals surrendering. He travels with Gavianana troops and continues solo marches when separated.
Iowa figures show the income tax cost 5.02 percent of proceeds in the first year, with $2,109,950 cash revenue and $105,968 expenses. The sales tax division brought in $11,501,789 with $248,643 expenses, while joint administration was $854,612. Salaries dominated costs in both divisions.
Sioux City December 13 update reports Attorney General Ed L. O Connor may face a new conspiracy charge. Court will defer adding the liquor conspiracy count until the jury is seated. Trial began with voir dire as jurors questioned for qualification. O Connor stands accused of conspiring to provide political protection to slot machine operators.
Townsend club urges opponents to attend Thursday night meeting at the courthouse. Ministers of the court receive a special invitation. Speaker will be Townsend organizer Mr. Collins of Burlington, noted as an able speaker.
