In Flint Michigan a man entered a restaurant and ordered a full breakfast then five hamburgers to go. After Mrs Rose Joseph gave the check for 82 cents he refused to pay saying he does not believe in that sort of thing.
The YWCA hosts a world fellowship week dinner for foreign women students from the State University of Iowa. The potluck event includes singing, music, and a chat with guests, plus opportunities to contribute to the world fellowship fund.
Senator Joseph McCarthy started closed hearings into possible Communist infiltration at General Electric Schenectady works. About 17 witnesses were to testify today, with remaining calls Friday. Cmdr. O P Ottoson from the Defense Department sat in as observer.
Washington's Community Chest nears its $223,500 goal with $850.37 remaining. Officials remain hopeful the target will be reached by tomorrow as workers rush final reports and pledges. Today's total in pledges and cash reaches $22,649.60.
A Waterloo man Eugene George Van Ackeren and his wife Lavonne were charged with wanton neglect of a child after police said they left their 8 month old daughter in a car back seat. The couple told investigators they thought the infant was in D. R. Harshbarger’s car when found.
In Panmunjom Korea the United Nations handed over a new batch of mail for 22 American prisoners still in Indian custody. Reds labeled leaders protested that the mail coerces them toward democracy and the UN planned to deliver mail individually to assess who accepts it while other repatriation operations were at a standstill.
Estle D. Riley of Washington was apprehended by highway patrol and sheriff's deputies Tuesday afternoon. He faced a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and bond was set at Shue.
Washington fire department responded to 220 North Marion Tuesday at 8 p m to a blaze started in a waste basket. The fire was quickly extinguished with no extensive damage though furniture and walls suffered smoke damage.
Walter B. McFarland was granted a divorce from Colene McFarland in district court on Tuesday November 10. He must pay 35 dollars per month for their son’s support and custody was granted to Colene through Mrs. McKune. Blanche E. Quinn was granted a divorce from Lionel Quinn and may resume maiden name Blanche E. Page.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Morrison home for Edmund D. Morrison Sr with burial at Elm Grove Cemetery. Dr. C. R. Reed presided. Pallbearers included Lee A. Holland Merritt McDaniel Henry F. Sheetz John A. Wing Carlton C. Wilson Irvan E. Coffey. Sherman’s Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Arthur Boshart presented twin eggs laid by a Hy-Line hen at the Journal. The soft shelled eggs were joined in a tube and appeared perfectly formed. The larger egg exceeded the usual size for eggs.
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson blamed overproduction for falling farm prices and urged voluntary controls and funding for new markets. He said past policies work but require higher demand, noting weak exports and questioning Truman administration actions during the Cold War.
Harley McCreedy gave the invocation to begin the annual American Legion Armistice day banquet at the city hall with over 100 attendees. A Wick school of dance recital followed the dinner, and Commander Tommie Tucker introduced guests including Clyde Brown Harley McCreedy and Reed Salladay. Mrs. Joe Simmering led the auxiliary and Mrs. Golia Miller spoke on veterans hospital activities.
Plans are under way to organize a boys 4 H farm project club and a girls 4 H club in Eureka community Marion township. Jim Elliott of the county extension service says a meeting will be at Eureka school for interested 4 H members and parents on Tuesday November 17 at 7 30 p m. Helpers include Elmer Graber Dwight Leiecty Everette Roth Marvin Rinner and Mr Bowser the school teacher.
The Washington Chest campaign reports current totals with $23,500 $20,000 $15,000 $12,000 $10,000 and $5,000, plus today’s receipts bringing the day’s total to $22,649.63. The figures reflect ongoing fundraising efforts and daily contributions.

Eloise Brown reports 4 H leaders will hold a second training school on Wednesday November 18 at 10 am in the extension office. Topics include dinner foods preparation and serving, table etiquette and service. A Kalona girls club is forming in that area with leaders Mrs Richard Kelly and Mrs Harvey Swartzendruberg and others from the first meeting.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ora E. Parry will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o clock in the Cotter Presbyterian church. Rev E O Dirks will be in charge. The body will be taken to Kansas for burial. Jones funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
Washington High School chorus and band begin annual concert ticket sales. Tickets cost 2 dollars and cover five performances: two band concerts, two chorus concerts, and one joint concert. Goal is 400 tickets with two rival teams led by Eddie Winga and Bob Cave. Proceeds fund music activities, uniforms, tours and awards. First band concert December 8. Chorus concert December 17.

Robert McDonald age 15 of route 3 Washington was hospitalized with facial lacerations abrasions bruises and possible skull fracture after a two car collision at East Third and North Twelfth streets at 8 20 am Wednesday. He rode in a car driven by Donald Palmer 16 of route 3. Palmer and Mrs Hattie Cherryholmes were uninjured. Damages were about 550 to the Cherryholmes auto and 375 to the Palmer car.
The state rests as pathologist Dr. Charles Phelps testifies on Wisdom’s wounds and death from a gunshot during a dispute over a sheep deal. He notes Wisdom may have lived up to 15 minutes after the shooting, with liver lacerations and bullet paths described.
Iowa Governor William Beardsley denounces Secretary Benson’s proposed reorganization of the Agriculture Department while groups in the state back the plan.
