Ivan Sullivan Dies on Scaffold in Iowa Prison
Ivan Leon Sullivan, 30, a spree of cattle theft kidnapping bank robbery and murder over seven violent years, was hanged at Iowa state prison in Fort Madison. Sheriff Mass of Lee County carried out the trap at 7:07 am CST with two physicians pronouncing death at 7:20. He was executed for killing prison guard Robert Hart during a 1940 attempt to free a fellow convict. Superintendent Haynes described him as once the most dangerous character he knew. He faced the hood and rope with little final statement, while earlier he had read a lengthy letter accusing warden and governor of a cheap unjust deal. He forgave none but later offered prayers for judge and warden. Ida Cavender of Riverside and Mrs Julia Cavender accompanied by Elder returned from St. Louis where Elder was in hospital care.

John Jeffrey 66 of two miles southeast of Ainsworth died suddenly at 8 15 p m after a long illness due to heart trouble. Funeral services will be at the Methodist church in Ainsworth tomorrow at two. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Survived by wife Abbie Mulhair two daughters and one brother. Daughter Florence died in 1924.
