At the Jasper county American Legion annual event in Iowa Newton five former German soldiers were guests. Iowa secretary of Agriculture Ray Murray addressed the gathering Friday night.
Des Moines an Iowa election scene as Gov Clyde L Herring gets a congratulatory note from former Gov Dan Turner his Republican opponent. The letter states I congratulate you on your election as governor of Iowa.
Former Senator James A. Reed, visiting a Cedar Rapids farm, refuses to forecast outcomes. He quips that predicting the future is like guessing in a lunatic asylum three months hence. He plans to remain active in public affairs and his law practice.
In Sioux City Iowa Luverne Wright aged 15 was killed at home when a rifle discharged while he handled it. His father had loaded the gun for a hunting trip planned for Sunday. Authorities say the incident remains under investigation with no final conclusions reported.
NEW HAMPTON Ia Chickasaw county farmers signed contracts to supply only 357 tons of corn fodder, far under the 5,000 ton quota set by the Agricultural Adjustment Administration. County administrator M M Thurow reported Sunday.
Creston Iowa faced a severe drought with a $60,000 relief water haul and a proposed $69,000 city buyout of the private plant. Voters rejected the bond plan at the general election, prompting state withdrawal of support and leaving an estimated 70 days of water on hand.
Ernest Moore aged 24 and Joe Moore aged 38 brothers of Cedar Falls began 30 day jail terms in Waterloo after pleading guilty to illegal possession of muskrat furs. They were fined 100 dollars and sentenced by Judge John S. Borreson at Cedar Falls.
Charles Petra of Traer in north Tama county reports an extraordinary potato crop. One potato measures 14 by 17 inches and weighs 2.5 pounds, with several near three pounds. He grew at least 1500 potatoes weighing between 1.5 and 2 pounds, vines spreading five feet or more.
In 1924 Black Hawk County farms produced a crop far above the national average of 21 bushels per acre. While U.S. corn fields yielded the smallest amount in 50 years, local Black Hawk County estimates indicate a crop not among the smallest in two generations.
Washington county board of supervisors began the official canvass of the general election results. Delays occurred as officials started at 1 45 PM instead of noon. The Cedar Township polls led the process with most races decided. only a narrow 30 vote margin separated Boyd Foster and R E F Brown for a county supervisory seat. If finished today Harold M Putnam is expected to assume the sheriff's unexpired term tomorrow.
Alex McCulley born in Ohio seventy one years ago last July 25 died at eleven o clock this morning after a lingering illness. Private funeral services will be held at Shermans funeral home awaiting word from some of the children. He was married about fifty years ago to Martha Dawson who died forty two years ago. Survived by Otto McCulley Davenport Charles Washington Mrs John Nicker son of Washington Mrs Harry Mayo Sigourney and Mrs Will Ruppert Iowa City and a number of grandchildren. Mr and Mrs Harold Pearson and Mrs Manford Rabenold for Ainsworth shopped here Friday.
A. J. Marken, assistant county agent, reports Black Hawk corn yields range 30 to 40 bushels an acre for hybrids and open pollinated varieties. Although below average, higher prices improve farmers' prospects, with the lowest observed open-pollinated yield this year at about 44 bushels per acre.
Professor Ralph A. Moyer of the College at Ames fixes a safe speed of 80 miles per hour on a clear track. Stopping distance at that speed is about 500 feet. He does not specify the number of possible rollovers in a crash at 80 mph.
Washington marks Armistice Day with a post, bank, and courthouse closures. The Legion and Women's Auxiliary sponsor an annual banquet at the Y M C A followed by a dance at the Knights of Columbus hall. Veterans of Foreign Wars held 21 salute bombs and Taps at eleven. Armistice sermons and music were heard in local churches.
In Beverly Hills, a speaker criticizes Republicans for offering only critique with no plan. He notes figures like Brisbane Borah La Follette and Johnson echoing the line you can’t beat something with nothing. A California voter recalls a candidate with 800,600 votes due to having a plan.
Three Iowans die in a two truck collision at a concrete bridge near Platte City Missouri Earl B Swingle 22 of Clarinda Jay Duren hitchhiker and Mannie Goss 25 of Des Moines Iowa killed in the wreck all were from Iowa Two other fatal auto crashes reported in Minnesota and Muscatine Iowa with local victims named including Wayne Coddington 25 Walt ham Minn and Lawrence Mason of Algona Iowa Enochs of Keokuk killed near Muscatine in a separate crash involving a truck driven by John Penrod
A roof fire Sunday morning at Mrs. T. J. Berdo’s residence on 114 East Seventh Street caused slight damage. Fire siren sounded and firefighters responded at around eleven o’clock.
Ur trial of Paul Hake 22 of Wapello opens for the murder of Martin Wolz on his farm near here. Tomy Thompson of St. Louis seated on death row and Eddie Tallant in state penitentiary for life connected to the slaying. Prosecution says shots were fired through a window as Wolz sat in a chair. Hake claimed to be an non accomplice after withdrawing a guilty plea.
Lewis Eugene Gardner of Wellman died yesterday morning after months of declining health. He was born Oct 17 in Lexington, son of James and Eliza Gardner, married to Julia Miksch Dee, and adopted Kathryn Elizabeth Gardner eleven years ago. Survived by his wife and three sisters. funeral Tuesday at Wellman Methodist Church, interment at Lexington cemetery.
Mrs C S Williams will give a book review at the public library tomorrow at one o'clock. The series runs each afternoon this week at 1 p.m. with Mrs Filams reviewing Stevedore about a New Orleans dispute between Negro stevedores and bosses and a race riot.
A large audience attended Armistice Day observances at United Presbyterian Church Sunday evening. Ex soldiers from World War I helped lead the program with readings, a war honor roll, and poems. Speakers emphasized peace and antiwar sentiment.
Nov. 12 0P appointment of field nurses to supervise health of relief families in Iowa announced by Miss Countryman state superintendent of public health nursing. One appointee, Hilkea Jacobs, lists residence Washington Iowa and joins Des Moines area supervisory effort.
Mrs. A. E. Atchison announces ward workers for the Red Cross annual Roll Call opening Thursday. Special meeting for all workers Wednesday at 6 30 PM in the Community Room of the Y M C A. Ward Captains and solicitors named for Wards I II III IV and IV outlined with numerous volunteers and four college girls who helped distribute posters.
The funeral for Keith Edward Ross infant son of Mr and Mrs Leslie Ross of Pleasant Ridge was held this afternoon at the family home with Silas Caldwell in charge and burial at Green Mound cemetery. The infant died Sunday evening at six o clock at home. Survived by parents two sisters Helen and Lois Jean and grandparents Mr and Mrs R A Messer of Wapello and Mr and Mrs Bert Rov of Wayland. L A Jones funeral home arranged.
Davenport and the Tri Cities felt a slight earthquake at 8:45 this morning, the first in Iowa for over twenty years, with tremors reported in Galesburg and Rock Island area. No damage was reported.
C A Neiswanger of the Washington post of the VFW today asks the Journal to express appreciation for the post and Auxiliary for responses to the poppy sale in town Saturday. About 75 dollars was realized for the VFW home for orphans of soldiers at Baton Rapids Michigan. A large corps of youthful saleswomen did fine service.
Tickets for the junior college Little Theater production Die tour go on sale tomorrow morning at McDaniel drug store. The play runs Thursday and Friday evenings November 15 and 16 at 8 15 with a half hour prelude by the Little Theater orchestra directed by Milburn A McKay. The orchestra makes its debut of the season.
Frank Ralph named the new assistant manager at the J G Penney Co store succeeding Glen McFarlane who left for a new role at Fal City Nebraska. Mrs McFarlane and Shirley Dowden accompanied him home. Ralph and his wife with their 14 month old Sally Ann moved from Des Moines and reside at 113 1/2 East Washington Street Brookhart apartment.
