Secretary of Labor summons Ceat Diggers and operators to negotiate a wage agreement. Lewie Gays says we cannot fight our government. The report notes mounting labor tensions and official mediation efforts.
The United States court order of November 5 directing cessation of operations in the bituminous coal fields within our jurisdiction is withdrawn and canceled. Officials of the United Mine Workers of America advise members that the October 15 order has been canceled in a good faith effort to comply. Signed by William Green and 30NLL. United Mine Workers recall a strike order affecting 425,000 miners after Judge A B Anderson's recall mandate. John L Lewis says miners comply, with protest, while Secretary Wilson seeks mediation and invites operators to Washington for wage talks.
Washington reports the railroad administration will release up to 0,000,000 tons of bituminous coal once miners return to work. Cars now hold fuel for 40 days in many lines, with New England and upper lakes regions near full winter supply.
In Centralia Washington on Armistice Day three former overseas soldiers died from shootings by Industrial Workers of the World militants. Four others were wounded as the mob moved on the I W W hall, with one man near death and others expected to recover. Six suspects were arrested and the town prepared for further action as militia was ordered to assist.
Within hours of the order, federal officers, a roughly seventy five strong force, pursue IWW members in Seattle and Centralia. Saunders, United States Attorney, vows no tolerance for radicals as two DOJ operatives leave Seattle to investigate the arson attack on an IWW building in Centralia.
Judge J M Jackson of Philips County Circuit Court in Helena sentenced to electrocution at Little Rock for insurrection and murder. The five to die December 27 are Frank Moore Ed Hicks J E Knox Ed Coleman and Paul Hull. The six to die January 1920 are Albert Giles Joe Fox John Martin Alf Banks Jr Wi Wordiow and Frank ea Nore.
British authorities raided Sinn Fein offices in Dublin on November 12, arresting nine people including Sinn Fein MPs John O Mahony John Hays and Frank Lawless. Documents were seized and inquiries continue.
Reports from multiple districts show mixed responses to the recall of the strike order. Iowa and Pennsylvania miners discuss resistance, while West Virginia and Arkansas Oklahoma Texas districts prepare for renewed operations as unions retaliate or comply.
Milwaukee November 12 Six Bacaiter Members of the county board refused to honor a Wisconsin soldier at 1 a m during a session. A heated dispute between a Socialist and a nonpartisan member over the officer s qualifications arose when Chairman William McCarty announced the governor s proclamation fixed the observance. The board rose and faced the east except for the Socialists.
Ohio's Tuesday vote opposed ratification by 641 votes after official returns show 499 for and 500 for ratification. Secretary of State Smith said nine county totals would be sent back for correction and 14 counties require vetting. James A White of the Ohio Dry federation calls for a recount.
Heavily guarded miners clash with authorities as troops move to end a riot at a mining town. Officials say peace talks are planned while workers demand safer conditions and higher wages.
State troops arrived as twelve hours of disorder ended with five dead. Four American Legion members were shot by Industrial Workers of the World members. I W W leader was hanged by a mob.
Herbert Hoover declared at a convention that America keeps an open door to Europe but may close it if foreign agitators persist. He urged a change in attitude to maintain the alliance and stability.
John F. Kremer, attorney of Mansfield Ohio, announced in Washington D C on November 18 that Peterson com. appoints Riedal Vering Janene and John F. Kremer as Federal Prohibition Commissioner in charge of enforcement of war time and constitutional prohibition.
Washington BC Nov 17 Thomas Brewster said mine owners accept Secretary Wilsons invitation to meet miners representatives there Thursday to negotiate a new wage agreement.
Seven accused swindlers including Muncie mayor Rollin Ht Boneh and Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney Florace G Murphy were found guilty in federal court for conspiring to defraud. The group ran fraudulent land deals fake prize rights and wheat trading schemes with the mayor and prosecutor accused of protecting them from arrest.
Washington November 12 The ailing president was allowed to sit up for an hour the first time since he returned from illness. He was wheeled in a chair around the White House entrance as medical care continues.
