Washington observers mark Armistice Day with speeches from military and naval leaders urging preparedness as the price of peace. The remarks come as the nation pauses for the third year of peace to honor America’s war dead.
About 200 people attended the Education Week program at the junior high school with students from the chorus bands and ensembles performing. Teachers and volunteers organized the event and served refreshments afterward, highlighting a student showcase in music.

Capt Charles Snyder of Washington's Troop A 113th Mechanized Cavalry announced 11 more men enlisted and sworn in during last night drill. Names include Richard Ward Richard Jugenheimer Charles R Smith William A Gilchrist Eugene Z Nicola Robert D Garrett John R Watson Robert G Amlong Frederic D Franklin Leslie D Eyestone Kenneth Snow. John Freshwaters formerly of Keota will read war poems Tuesday afternoon on the Parsons College program at three o'clock over Ottumwa’s KBIZ. Miss Virginia Johnson of Fairfield will participate in the broadcast.
Secretary of State Marshall testified before the Senate relations committee that the Truman administration would seek about 200 million dollars for China with spending around 20 million monthly. He outlined a broader foreign aid package totaling roughly 2.657 billion dollars for the current fiscal year, including aid to Austria France and Italy and initial Marshall Plan installments. He noted possible Greek Turkish aid but not likely this year.

Overnight into today brought frigid winter weather to Washington Iowa with a low of 12 degrees, 12 degrees below the season’s previous low of 24 Sunday morning. The sun rose but temperatures remain cold as a typical Iowa winter day persists.
Merton Ephriam of the Bee Line discussed a plan with Chamber of Commerce secretary John Lee to transport gifts from Washington to the Friendship Train in Cedar Rapids. Cedar Rapids outlets notified that gifts must arrive there today so the plan was canceled. WMT radio reported gifts could not be handled after today.
A carload of corn from Spencer Iowa heads to Boone to join the trans continental friendship train. The grain is bought from a local concern at cost with over 3000 dollars donated by residents of 35 northwestern Iowa communities. The caravan will stop six times in Iowa.
James K Zeck aged 86 died at Washington County Hospital after illness since May. He lived at 417 East Main Street and was born February 14, 1861 in Jackson township. Survived by son Ralph, sisters Francis McKim and Millie Manley, six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Funeral at L A Jones Funeral Home Thursday at 2 pm with Dr. Fred E. Miller officiating. Burial at Kim Grove Cemetery. He farmed, served as township trustee, and belonged to the Methodist church and Journal’s Three-Quarter Century club.
Judge J G Patterson presides as tentative assignments set for two jury cases and one nonjury case. Planned jury matters include the Rabio Savings bank of Brighton vs Acme Farm Products and Hannah J and Paul Ross, plus Roy Furman charged with operating motor vehicle while intoxicated. No grand jury is expected this term. Dorothy Marie Burns files for divorce with attorney T Reagan Adams.
