A formal motion for a new trial was filed by Carter’s lawyers in district court. Twenty six reasons are listed including ten challenging jury instructions by Judge Wennerstrom. Carter was found guilty Nov 1 after a three week trial with 116 witnesses.
Webster county to host four highway first aid stations as part of a national Red Cross experiment to reduce auto accident toll. Stations at oil stations or cabin camps expected ready by January 1.
Boone reports deposed hoboes king Hairbreadth Harry visited and announced a forthcoming book titled Textbook on System. He claims the work will teach how to eliminate waste motion.
Mrs. Bing Gow, mother of a Burlington born daughter and wife of a local restaurant man, was taken to Chicago by immigration officials to await deportation to China. She chose to take her four year old daughter with her.
Des Moines reports the death of Edward Howard Hunter age 86 a prominent Iowa financier and political figure. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage at his home on November 1 and never regained consciousness after being moved to a hospital.
Jay H. Schuchardt 66 of Iowa City died en route to University Hospital after a heart attack during the Iowa Iowa Minnesota football game. He was in the permanent stands. his death was not tied to a temporary bleacher collapse before kickoff.
Des Moines reports Governor Herring may send Floyd Olson of Minnesota, a brother of the actor known as Blue Boy, as payment of the bet on the Iowa Minnesota football game. Blue Boy was the prize hog in the film State Fair with Will Rogers.
Mrs C V Cave wife of the vice president of the First State Bank suffered a broken arm and injured knee in a Chicago auto accident while en route for cataract surgery. Her eye operation succeeded but she later required another operation for a ruptured appendix.
At the Iowa Minnesota football game in Iowa City a Mills family split their support between teams. Charles Mills and relatives from Moline Des Moines and Minneapolis cheered Minnesota, while Mrs Charles B Mills Jr a Clinton native and Iowa alum joined Miles Mills in rooting for Iowa.
Des Moines reports organized labor in Iowa is ready to strike or picket WPA projects to force a wage revision. J C Lewis, president of the Iowa federation of labor, led a mass meeting of about 900 leaders and delegates directing a direct appeal to President Roosevelt and Iowa’s officials for wage adjustments based on prevailing local hourly rates. If no progress, another meeting may be held and strikes or project picketing considered.
A town man arrested by Night Marshal Pollok Wallace for drunkenness fought fiercely before being taken to the county hospital with a dislocated shoulder. Deputy Wes Custer helped restrain him as authorities decide next steps.
An Armistice Day salute in Central Park turned chaotic as several bombs exploded early. VFW members were lighting 21 bombs. a burning fragment ignited others, causing a loud burst. Some veterans sustained minor burns while portions of clothing were damaged. The remaining bombs then detonated. A trumpet group, led by Jesse Radda, performed the anthem and taps with sons of veterans among its members.
County Attorney George F Morrison and Sheriff Harold M Putnam investigated a daytime entry into Mrs Bertha Phillips home by a young man said to be drinking. He fled after frightening the resident, claimed to recall nothing from drinking gin, and did not face formal arrest.
Dr David J Berger of Muscatine a Presbyterian minister will speak at the interdenominational Men and Missions banquet at the Methodist church Friday at 6 30 P M. The program aims to finish in time for attendees to join the education week events at the high school. Men from all denominations are welcome with tickets sold by Baptist Christians Presbyterians United Presbyterians and Methodists. The Wesleyan Home Missionary Society will serve the meal in the M E social hall.
President Roosevelt led Armistice Day ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery marking the 17th anniversary of the armistice. He urged lasting peace through example at home and abroad and a global effort to prevent war, while American Legion commander Ray Murphy called for neutrality and preparedness.
Nelile K. Johnson 78, of Muscatine, died at the Thrasher home in the Prairie Flower area after a brief illness ending around 7:30 PM. She was in town to attend her sister Mrs T B Thrasher’s funeral, and leaves a Kansas brother and a widow. Burial plans pending at L A Jones funeral home with Muscatine or Illinois City likely sites.
H W Stucker of Wilton suffered severe cut and head bruises Saturday evening after his car crashed with a Jefferson county machine on the Brighton road southwest of town. The Stucker car was driven by Jack Richardson of Albia. no other passengers were injured.
King Palmer at West Union High School urged students to embrace peace time patriotism and Christian education. He spoke of democracy and civilization as world war aims, noting ex servicemen backing a call for service and duty, with civil war veterans present to honor the past.
Rapid City dispatch notes Explorer balloon reaches 74 187 feet at 12 25 pm marking a new altitude record surpassing 61 237 feet. Captain Albert Stevens reports frosted gondola windows and 21 degrees above zero inside while outside the temperature falls to 76 below.
Italy sent a note to league powers protesting sanctions and breastthreats, with Premier Mussolini telling crowds on the king's birthday that Italian columns advance into eastern Ethiopia while Italy’s army stands ready to defend its interests.
