Gas prices at local stations fall to 24.9 cents per gallon for regular as a price fight continues. The battle, started Oct. 31, enters its eleventh day with dealers unsure when it ends or what prices will settle at. Some managers complain, others welcome the new business amid shifts in fuel pricing. Regular gas normally about 35.9 cents, premium 3 to 4 cents higher.
Ankeny Police Chief Art Doubleday said authorities search for Donald Lawson, 37, of Ankeny in connection with the death of Penny Clark, 57, whose body was found in her Kenworthy home before noon. The Polk County Medical Examiner reported a 22 caliber weapon was used and the woman was shot in the head and beaten.
A school bus carrying children from a skating party was broadsided by a car in Covina. Twenty two youngsters aged 10 to 14 and the car’s two occupants were hospitalized with broken teeth lacerations and broken bones but none were reported critically hurt.
City officials urge residents to demand identification from young candy sellers and verify sponsoring organization before contributing. Reports say some boys gave evasive or changing stories and one instance involved abuse when a housewife refused to buy due to lack of clear sponsorship. Officials ask groups planning such sales to contact city hall beforehand.
The fall program, Project Spring, provides free adult classes at the Washington high school run by Kirkwood Community College. About 26 currently enroll, with 300 plus in the region overall, teaching reading, math, and GED test prep. Sessions run Thursdays 7 to 10 pm under coordinators Sandra Weller, Steve Gronert, and George Maybanks.

The non profit group trains workers for in home chores and personal care, supplements medical care, and operates part time with $2.75 hourly fees and county and federal grants.
