Kennedy Nixon Close Popular Vote Marks Historic Tie

Nearly complete returns show Kennedy at 49.99 percent and Nixon 50.01 in the popular vote, the tightest margin in 76 years. Excluding third parties, Kennedy leads 50.24 to 49.76 with about 320000 votes separating them, leaving the final outcome uncertain.

Red Cross Awards Program Held By Washington County Chapter

The Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross held a Wednesday evening capping and awards program at the Farm Bureau building. Mrs Lawrence Miksch presided and presented service awards while Mrs Ralph Martin led Gray Lady capting of new volunteers. Guests included L. E Hunn from Iowa City Veterans Hospital and Dr E J Vosika.

Retarded Children's Week Opens Sunday

Washington County begins Retarded Children's Week on Sunday November 13 continuing through Thanksgiving Day. Keith Proctor president of the county association notes about 3 percent of residents are mentally retarded and warns the problem grows. He cites 1 900 new cases yearly and urges expanded community services including day care nurseries classes sheltered workshops and home visiting programs.

Methodist Men Hear From Space Scientist

About 75 members of the Methodist men's club heard William Whelpley, research assistant at the State University of Iowa and associate of Dr. Van Allen, discuss the space age. A moon shot film titled June 3 and notes on future tonnage space vehicles were shown, aiming for a million mile reach. Charles Rademaker led the group in planning five winter meetings.

Extension Director Named for County in Washington County

James R. Frier, Boone County extension associate, named county director in Washington County. He takes office December 1, filling the vacancy after Tom Robb’s resignation to Iowa City. Frier, a 1956 Iowa State University graduate with a farm operations major, is married with two children.

Fire Damages Garage At County Home Today

A fire started in the attic of a garage at the county home near Washington around 12 10 p m damaging the roof ceiling and tools. Local volunteers kept the blaze contained and extinguished it within minutes. Damages were estimated near 1200 with water and heat affecting some contents. Fire Chief Brown said the cause was not known though it appeared to originate in the attic portion west of the home.
