Hungarian border guards halted a 15-truck Red Cross convoy at Klingenbach to Budapest, refusing aid passage and directing relief through Yugoslavia. Refugees report strong Soviet assaults, dwindling rebel support, and mass casualties with 8,000 to 9,000 dead.
The United Nations moved to wind up emergency sessions while organizing a U N food and medicine program for Hungary and refugee relief. The U S pledged a 1 million dollar grant and airlift logistics were arranged for a multinational police force to patrol the Middle East fighting area as Egypt withdrawals proceeded.
Open house events to mark National Education Week are planned across Washington public schools. The junior high and high school events start at 7 30 p m Monday and Tuesday respectively, with Lincoln Elementary hosting Thursday at 7 30 p m and Stewart Elementary inviting families for a 6 30 p m pot luck supper.
Authorities pursue a bank robber who impersonated an Air Force officer at Chanute Field. The bandit robbed the First National Bank of Thomasboro of 1536 dollars, fled in a car at high speed, and was pursued by Air Police FBI and state and county officers. Evidence found includes 1251 dollars in a barracks broom closet and an Air Force jacket with lieutenant bars.
Washington post office will be closed all day Monday in observ ance of Veterans Day. Stores and many other offices including banks will also close. Courthouse offices will remain closed for the day.
A patrolman issued a speeding ticket to an auto driver in Camden New Jersey and dropped the summons on the street. The motorist filed a citizen's warrant against the officer for littering a public thoroughfare. In court the motorist was fined 14 dollars while the cop paid 25 dollars.
The U S Department of Agriculture places Iowa corn at 511.632 million bushels for the year, 2 percent under 1955 and 5 percent below the 10 year average. November harvest was 11 million bushels shy of 1955 but up 11 million from October. Soil bank participation and drier weather reduced yields, while Illinois led with 595.563 million bushels. Soybeans rose 18 percent, hay and pasture fell, and pastures were 56 percent of normal on November 1.
President Eisenhower departed Washington at 8 45 a m CST for a short rest at his Gettysburg Pennsylvania farm. Maj Gen Howard M Snyder accompanied him in the White House plane while James Hagerty and George Allen followed in a second plane. The White House said the president would be kept informed on Eastern European and Middle East crises through the day. Hagerty noted resignations from all cabinet officers and from Disarmament Adviser Harold E Stassen were received.
Washington High invites fans to buy tickets for the Gridiron Dinner on November 19 at 6 30 p.m. in the old gym. Guest speaker Edd Bowers of Iowa Wesleyan College will attend with players from his team. Tickets cost 2 50 and cover the purchaser meal and a boy's meal.
A U S Navy P5M patrol bomber with 10 crew is missing north of Bermuda after last contact Friday night on a routine training flight. Coast Guard Bermuda crews and a Liberian freighter reported a plane exploded and crashed off the Maryland coast amid extremely poor visibility and heavy seas.
The Agriculture Department set the 1957 national corn acreage allotment at 37,288,889 acres and scheduled December 11 for a referendum in 24 states on continuing the soil bank program for corn. If rejected, the 37,288,889 acre allotment would take effect, about 6,000,000 under 1956. Pricesupport levels will be announced soon, possibly next week.
Seoul reports say North Korean and Chinese Communist trucks carrying weapons tighten moves toward the truce front. The North accuses U S forces of dangerous incursions with two F51 Mustangs contested near Panmunjom.
Oscar Womack 27 found a muddy charred pile of $100 bills on his Weatherford farm. Bank official C H Kennedy examined the notes and found duplicated serial numbers, suggesting counterfeit. Fire may have been used to destroy evidence. Neighbors helped search Willow Creek as the bill discovery drew crowds.
Washington Presbyterian Young Adult group joins national Operation Santa Claus to provide Christmas gifts for Korean children. Donations requested by Monday November 12. Marshall's Furniture Store will collect and ship packages of food clothing and toys to Korea, with pickup arranged by phone.

Atomic Commissioner Thomas E. Murray warned Washington that the United States must face the possible need for a limited nuclear war. He argued total war would bring “total woe,” urged expansion of tactical weapons, and said deterrence may fail implying war could follow failed peaceful efforts.
The officers of Battery A 113th AAA Bn honored Pvt Lawrence D Burns of Wellman with a new pair of combat boots during a regular drill. Burns was the top recruit from 200 in Camp Haven Wisconsin in August and will attend an open house at the local Armory on Saturday November 17 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The unit will display military service information and offer free coffee and doughnuts.
Johnny Bragg 35 and Robert S Riley 28 wrote Just Walking in the Rain while in prison. Bragg serves 99 years for murder with no parole, possible only via governor commutation. Riley has just completed a prison term and shares writing credits.
Louie Hirsch a Clarksville farmer lost an eye after a handcrank slipped from his grip and struck his face. He was injured recently and received medical treatment.
Partly cloudy conditions across Iowa with warmer tones tonight and Sunday. Lows range from 30 in the northeast to near 40 in the southwest and highs in the 40s to 50s, with little temperature change expected Monday.
