Two Harrison County Bridges Blown Up Reported

Two railway bridges near Woodbine Iowa in Harrison county were dynamited today halting traffic on the Northwestern and Millinois Central lines. Sheriff C F Cross said evidence of preparation was found at both sites suggesting the same perpetrators. Detectives and state and county officers joined the investigation amid a week of rail bridge sabotage reports.

Will Sell Poppies on Armistice Day

The Washington post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars arranged a poppy sale in Washington tomorrow to benefit the home for soldiers orphans at Eaton Rapids Michigan. Washington residents are urged to contribute by buying and wearing poppies on Armistice Day. Buddy Poppy Sale.

Kacere Indicted in Death of Keister in Iowa Road Crash

Charlies Kacere of Cedar Rapids was indicted by a Waverly grand jury for manslaughter in the Sept 17 accident at highways 59 and 10 that killed six people including three Waterloo men Harry Kiester La Verne King and Howard Harrington and also claimed Kacere’s brother a Syrian priest his nephew and his mother. The jury found evidence of criminal negligence for failing to stop at the highway 10 intersection despite signs.

CP President Gran San Martin issued a military order declaring Havana under siege and advising all inhabitants to remain outside the city.

New Automobile Plates for Next Year and Local Volleyball Odds

Next year's automobile numbers will use a dark blue background with yellow letters and go on sale January first. About 6 000 plates for cars and 650 track numbers were received by the county treasurer, with distribution instructions pending. Ottumwa volleyball teams defeated the local Y players three games to two at the Washington Y. M. C. A. Spectators saw strong play and free admission, with Burlington games slated for next Thursday and a second match in Burlington on November 22.

Stores Open as Usual on Armistice Day in Washington

Two New Tax Bills Enter Iowa Legislature

In Des Moines on November 10 two new measures, a gross income tax proposed by Senator Harrington and a gross sales tax bill by Representative Cunningham, promise a historic tax revision fight. The Brookings Institute report will be released when the legislature reconvenes, with interim committee recommendations for net income, corporation, and sales taxes noted. The split on tax measures is expected to be nonpartisan as Cunningham, a Republican, and Harrington, a Democrat, push their proposals.

Buddy Poppy Sale Continues as Hess Family Relocates

Ralph Hess of Winfield will move his family to town next week to work at Rukgaber hardware. He has assisted part time since the store opened here and has prior employment with W J Rukgaber in Winfield. Mrs Hess is sister to Don Paul of Washington. The couple has one child, DeLoris Jeanne, set to start first grade at Height school, living in an apartment at 608 North Rows in the Frank Mefar lane home.

T. J. Gasaway of Brighton Dies at 80

Brighton, Nov 10 Thomas J Gasaway aged 80 who lived in the area most of his life died yesterday afternoon after years of ill health. Funeral services were held at Hoskins funeral home at 3 pm and burial followed in Clay cemetery. He was born August 14 1853 in Shepherdsville Kentucky and moved to Iowa with his father in 1857. He married Sophia Pringle in 1882 and they lived on a farm near Brighton before moving to town in 1918. Surviving are his widow two sons H W Gasaway of Coyl Oklahoma and LL B at home four nieces and nephews.

Armistice Day Flag Display Rules Highlighted

Tomorrow November 11 Armistice Day marks a flag display occasion. The DAR booklet asks if the flag may be half-masted. the answer says no, not correct though some do it. The president’s proclamation requires full mast on federal buildings and a period of silence at 11:00 AM honors sacrifices.

King Affair Tickets Go On Sale For Karl King Events

Tickets for a Karl L. King banquet and concert went on sale with 38 Washington Municipal Band members and local service clubs promoting. The event moves from the State Theater to the U P Church with reduced prices 25 cents for the concert and 35 cents for the banquet. King will be honored as his compositions are played by the Municipal Band, with any revenue aiding music for a new band. Sixty seven towns invited to attend.

Condition of Mr. Burham Is Worse After Accident

The 78 year old George Burham remained in serious condition at the county hospital after his lower right leg was amputated following an accident with freight train wheels. Surgeons reported he withstood the operation yesterday, but recovery remains doubtful and a clearer prognosis is expected in a few days. In East Bridgewater, Mass., a pet parrot or peacock incident led to a confinement after the bird attacked a visitor’s car, mistaking its reflection for a rival.

Professor Floyd Nagler Dies at Iowa City

Prof. Floyd Nagler 41 head of hydraulics at the University of Iowa engineering school died in Iowa City after peritonitis following appendix surgery. A faculty member since 1921 and holder of Norman and Croes medals, he helped survey upstream Mississippi River navigation. He leaves a widow and two children.
