A Nashua column notes Carl Peterson longtime caretaker of the Little Brown Church in the Vale will be buried Friday after 20 years in service.
Fort Dodge hunters J Musselman and Harold Thompson were arrested after their dogs flushed three ringnecks out of season. They paid fines and costs totaling 2.40 dollars.
George Wallace a 50 year old Wesley farmer suffered second degree burns on his legs while attempting to extinguish a tire fire in a cornfield. He was brought to a hospital in Algona for treatment.
About two hundred women expected at a one day state workers rally of the Degree of Honor Protective Association in Ottumwa. Mrs Frances Buell Olson national president addressed the group at a banquet honoring state organizers.
Des Moines reports Governor Wilson is asked to require cars to play the Iowa corn song via horns. Alex Fitzhugh, secretary of the Greater Des Moines committee, proposes 1941 license plates shaped like an ear of corn.
W Butler 48 longtime Algona resident and former Ben Franklin store owner died of double pneumonia after years as a diamond mine manager in Belgium. Survived by parents wife and a 6 year old daughter who is quarantined for scarlet fever.
Sioux City police say Walter A Hand a 44 year old bookbinder was picked up in a routine roundup then identified as a Yuan indicted by a federal grand jury in Omaha on using the malls to defraud. His wife 38 is held without charge. Hand was indicted on July 27 with others for faking automobile accidents and collecting settlements from insurers.
Eight businessmen split between Arcadia and Halbur will compete in a friendly corn husking contest on the Henrys pop tart site. Mayors Stoelk of Arcadia and Schenkelberg of Halbur will fire the start and finish guns. None of the eight has husked corn in ten years.
Federal Judge George C. Scott denies a motion to dismiss a $125,000 judgment suit filed in Dubuque by Charles J. Wolfe McGregor against State Senator Geske Elkader Charles F. Murphy Elkader George B. Richter Waukon and F E Sharp Elkader for false arrest and imprisonment. The motion claimed the case was time barred by the statute of limitations.
Dubuque reports tough luck in football as Loras academy star Tom Voelker breaks his right hand in a pre final practice for Marmion Military academy game. Earlier, brother Joe shattered a foot before a final encounter in 1936, and Chris a nose fracture in 1938 during the last game of that season.
Paris November 9. Heavy German assaults on the western front were anticipated after hours of intensified patrols and large scale troop movements behind German lines. Movements of more troops into front lines coincided with the arrival of heavy reinforcements and intense patrol activity suggested an imminent attack.
The Troop F armory on West Madison street nears completion with south east and west walls up and most of the roof in place. A view from the southwest shows the front wall unfinished, tar and roof coverings pending, and the stable area surrounded by a new corrall with high board fencing. completion expected around December.
Dean Mason Ladd of the University of Iowa urged teachers and parents that American education builds independent thinkers who defend democracy. He contrasted democracy with totalitarian rule, stressed two strong parties, and praised Socratic teaching that encourages students to form their own ideas. The talk, part of a local certification week program, highlighted the cultural and spiritual sides of America alongside its educational system.
Funeral services for E. J. Richards longtime Ainsworth leader will be held Saturday at 2 PM at the Ainsworth Methodist church with Rev C E Coggeshall. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery includes a Masonic grave service. Richards served on the town council and three terms as mayor, and was sexton of the cemetery for twelve years. He died yesterday after moving to Washington to live with his daughter Mrs Edna Franklin. He born December 25 1860 near Galesburg Illinois. Surviving are ten children and siblings, with his wife having died in 1938.
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain stated Britain will not surrender until Europe is freed from tyranny. In a Lord Mayor's speech read by Sir John Simon, Chamberlain, at home in London, expressed distrust of Germany and signaled skepticism about Dutch and Belgian peace efforts.
In France five miles up, a young New Zealander shot down a German fast fighter during an air raid, reporting bullets striking the engine as the German aircraft spiraled and crashed in a village. The Allied pilot remained unscathed.

Washington county announces premium list for the annual poultry show to be held at city hall December 6 7 8 and 9. Exhibits will feature several hundred top fowls from county raisers with a large cash prize program. Art Prall serves as president, Mrs Joe Wolfe as vice president, and Harry Ramseyer as secretary and treasurer.

John C. Jones 61 of the Ainsworth Haskins area died yesterday afternoon at his home after a stroke. He was the first cashier of the Haskins Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank and served fifteen years. Funeral services are set for Friday at 3 PM at Jones Funeral Home, with burial in Ainsworth cemetery. He leaves Nellie Pearson Jones wife, Homer Jones son in Washington DC, Martha daughter in Chicago, two brothers W C Jones Wise River and Maurice Jones Coneaville, two sisters Mrs Mary Mikseh Wellston and Mrs Grace Brown Washington. One brother Joe H Jones is deceased. He served in the Spanish American War with Company D 10th infantry and led the Albert M Huff Spanish American Camp No 26 of Washington.

Oscar V. Critz 55 former Riverside resident died at University Hospital Iowa City from a complication of diseases after a year of declining health. Funeral set for 9 am Saturday at Emmetsburg Catholic church with burial there. Survived by wife Honora Sullivan Critz and seven children, plus four sisters and three brothers.

German secret police begin a broad roundup of bombing suspects after a blast wrecked the Munich beer hall where Hitler once led a failed coup.
