Officials estimate the Tuesday election in Des Moines cost about 250000 dollars to cover judge and clerk salaries at polls printing ballots and other supplies.
More than ten thousand southbound ducks feed on Cedar Lake before nightfall as a snow pause delays the migration. E. J. Petranek, a sportsman, estimates the flock near Cedar Rapids and expects they will linger for a few days.
Mrs. Jane E. Frederick of Emmetsburg was awarded a divorce from Howard Frederick in local courts. Judge James Deland of Storm Lake granted the divorce on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment. The couple had been married 45 years.
Grundy Center board of education let contracts for the new high school building with a $90,000 total. Edward F. White of Eldora won the general contract for $76,459, the Electric Co. of Algona secured the electrical bid at $3,746, and Cronch and Loveless of Iowa Falls won the heating and plumbing contract for $13,995.
Ottumwa Marlin Heekart, 2, farmhand, sustained a serious gunshot wound to the right leg just below the hip while rabbit hunting with brother Jarrell Heekart. Ottumwa hospital attendants report condition is fair. Heekart says they stood on opposite sides of a ditch when a rabbit ran across and the brother, attempting a shot, struck him. The injured is son of M H Heekart.
Henry Rhoads 58 dies at O K Olson farm while helping husk corn after complaining of chest pains in the morning. He grew ill en route, asked an ominous question to a station attendant, then died near the house. Survived by wife, one son, and four daughters.
A head on crash near Lone Tree left 27 year old Robert Reilly and 28 year old Helen Ruppert of Iowa City injured. Ruppert, a rural school teacher, was driving toward Iowa City when the collision occurred. both were taken to Mercy Hospital in Iowa City with Ruppert more seriously hurt.
Estherville merchants clash with city officials over a sale of electric equipment and water softeners. The council cites a recent Iowa Municipalities League ruling allowing city owned light plants to supply such equipment, while business leaders condemn the move as unwarranted interference with private commerce. Local residents A.KE Horton and Mrs Glen Horton were noted shopping.
A Des Moines INS report tabs 216 of 2,447 precincts showing Senator Gillette leading Dickinson by about 1,600 votes as counts near end. Gillette carried three of nine districts but held big margins in two, while Republicans swept governor and several congressional seats amid a statewide landslide.
New York dispatch reports a resurgent Republican party gaining ground after eight years of defeat while Democrats hold Congress with reduced majorities. Senate seats shift, 14 new governors elected, and races in Iowa Indiana hinge on late returns as President Roosevelt faces a changed 76th Congress.
Complete returns from Henry and Washington counties show A. Claire Dewey Republican incumbent leading Democrat Will Griffin. Dewey’s margin in Henry county was 2,194 with 4,194 to 2,000, while Washington county yielded a 1,676 majority with 3,660 to 1,984.

A re-check of the Gillette Dickinson vote in 1437 of 2447 precincts shows Dickinson 237,422 to Gillette 236,695 among complete returns. Wilson’s vote remains unspecified as the tally continues on page 2.
Returns from 22 precincts compiled this morning show revisions to governor, senator, congressman and county offices. Dickinson gains 74 votes on Gillette, Dewey loses 2 due to a miscount in Washington township. other state offices run strongly Republican. Cooperation from election boards aided rapid compilation.
Arnold named chairman of the Legion drum corps board and announced four other members Charles Denison Dr P L Etter Arnott Wylie and Howard Miller. He has long supported the corps and helped lead its recent reorganization efforts.
Reports from the annual Y M C A canvass show a further increase in pledges for next year raising the total to 4370. The budget of 5150 remains out of sight but closer each day. The drive continues through the week with ward returns listed: First 1444, Second 1022, Third 822.50, Fourth 759, specials and rural 322.50.
Commander Ed Squire of Leon Beatty Post, American Legion, urges support for a limited offer of commemorative pocket pieces. The campaign stresses the collectible nature and honors veterans with the promotional run ending Friday.
Postmaster M C DeLong announced Armistice day will be observed as a legal holiday by the Washington postoffice for the first time. Window hours will run from 9 to 10 in the morning for stamps, but there will be no city or rural mail deliveries that day.
Ernst Von Rath, third secretary at the German embassy in Paris, died today from a double gunshot wound inflicted Monday by a Polish Jewish assailant seeking revenge for oppression of his people. Mr and Mrs J C McKay departed for Tampa to spend the winter.
