A large helium balloon carrying Navy pilots MD Ross and M L Lewis reached 78,000 feet near Kennedy South Dakota before the gondola spun out of control and the craft descended rapidly. The pilots, who radioed for guidance and opened gondola hatches below 20,000 feet to dump ballast, walked away from the wreckage after the crash near the Badlands eight hours after launch. In Ida Grove Iowa a 33 year old mother Marie Gempeler and her two children Larry six and Janet two were killed when her car hit a Chicago North Western freight train at a short cut crossing on the town's west edge. Wayne ten, another Gempeler child, was listed in critical condition. A second vehicle was narrowly avoided by the train. The wreck follows two prior Iowa car train crashes in roughly a month.
