Marquette University faces Iowa in Milwaukee before 17,000 fans on homecoming day. Weather sunny and mild as Marquette seeks its first Western Conference win since 1919. Iowa drives to near goal, but sputters with multiple punts and a late stop as the quarter ends with Marquette leading 6 0.
New directories for the local telephone system have just been issued to subscribers and patrons. Manager Loyd Morrison calls it the best the company has issued in Washington. Printing was done in the Journal office. The book lists Washington homes and businesses alphabetically and includes a useful classified business directory. Tuth Anwyl and Catherine Bens of Columbus Junction are visiting the C. home this weekend.
Campaign for funds to support the Washington Y M C A for the coming year nears completion as memberships and pledges are gathered. About 75 solicitors plan to visit more prospects in the next days to lift total past five thousand dollars and raise funds for decorating the Y building walls and ceilings, estimated at six hundred dollars.
Corporal Orval Kort of Tr F, 114th Cavalry, will travel to Des Moines next Tuesday to begin a three day preliminary examination for appointment to the U S military academy at West Point. Capt Jay O Brown of Troop F announced the plan noting several Iowa National Guard applicants compete. Kort, a Washington junior college sophomore and former star in football and basketball, is pursuing an extension course in military training.
At Shenandoah, 16 contestants including past champions vie for town title and two top huskers advance to represent the state in the national contest at Norton next Friday. Notables include Fred Janek of Fort Dodge, Bent Harmon of Malvert, Ben Grimmus of Grundy Center, and Leo Rettler of Hedrick.
In a tight post election scenario Republicans and Democrats each hold 217 seats in the House, with Independents and farmer labor groups hovering as possible power brokers. Senate balance hinges on recounts and potential defections, while parties race to form a governing coalition as leaders pledge constructive policy.
Two youthful bandits held up two employees of Boyajohn and Barr contractors as they left a branch bank today and escaped with a 4500 payroll. Mrs WOM Finke went to Iowa City today to bring her daughter Mary home for the weekend.
METZ France Nov 7 Construction of one of history s mightiest defenses proceeds rapidly. The steel line will total about 200 forts along the Franco German border with 300 forts planned across Alsace and Lorraine. Forts under iron steel and concrete will guard key crossings and towns with pill boxes dugouts and shelters. Engineers push toward a three year timetable as vast arsenals near Metz defend Verdun scale fortifications.
Washington Masons held a meeting in the new lodge room on the rebuilt Masonic hall floor, with about 40 to 300 members present to celebrate completing the edifice. They praised superintendent Swan Benson for his work, and plan to equip the rose and club rooms while forming committees for finances. Also noted are Red Cross preparations in nearby counties with over forty workers and a report by Dr. Edward A. Pirge on Wisconsin lake transparency and fish life.
The United States recognized the revolutionary Brazilian government headed by Getúlio Vargas. Ambassador Edward Morgan in Rio informed the new regime the U.S. will maintain friendly relations. Recognition followed a military junta turnover on November and came minutes after a White House briefing with President Hoover.
Kenneth Carris, program committee head, released the Armistice Day banquet details to be held next Tuesday evening in the community room at the Y M C A. CHICAGO November SAP Mes Mary Warhurst aged 49 identified as a former dramatic teacher at Iowa Wesleyan College was fined 100 and jailed for one year in a south State Street municipal court on shop lifting charges. Judge Edgar Jonas suspended the fine and sentence and placed her on probation for a year. Warhurst testified she took 100 dollars of wearing apparel from Chicago stores after money ran out and she was starving and out of work for two years.
Judge D. W. Hamilton adjourned district court until next Wednesday morning at nine o clock. Trial of the probate case of the estate of Henry Hites is set for that hour. Several court orders were issued this week, with cases including Washington Hoan v. Trust Co. and others, all given ten days to plead. Bratten et al vs W. H. Hu, and several insurance and motor company actions faced similar scheduling. Bristol Tennessee King College plans a major fund drive, with contributions to reach 650,000 and a 100,000 addition from college authorities.
Secretary of War Hurley announced the War Department would provide all available army cots and blankets to distressed unemployed people. He assumes authority to issue gear and will review future aid requests as Arthur Woods urges a national effort. Registration drives in Chicago aim to map unemployment relief with 200000 cards issued across schools and volunteers assisting.
Weather outlook for period November 10 to 15 covers upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys along with northern and central Great Plains. Mostly fair with rain or snow possible in northern parts early and late week. Mild at start, cooler midweek, warmer by end.
