Returns from Iowa precincts show Brookhart leading Herring for U.S. Senate by about 100000 as Republicans win a large majority in Congress. Governor race leans Republican with Kendall and Miles figures, while other statewide races favor GOP. Nationwide results echo a strong Republican wave with a solid delegation promised.
United States Senator Smith W. Brookhart of Washington County resigns as Lieutenant Colonel of Infantry O R C to comply with the constitutional ban on holding another office. The Iowa Republican, a Rooseveltian, has long been active in state and national politics and won the Senate seat in 1922 by a large margin. His wife Jennie Hearne is cited as a supportive partner as the Brookhart family is congratulated.
