Ohio claimed by Republicans as Kentucky shows close contest. Nebraska pledges fusion victory while Maryland backs Democrats. New York and Massachusetts trends favor Republicans. Cleveland faces policed scrutiny during visit to Mercer Street polling.
Spectators claim the event drew a large turnout with long lines and spirited support. Organizers reported high energy and strong participation from attendees despite earlier weather concerns.
Baltimore reports show Maryland Republicans defeated. John Walter Smith elected by an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 majority. Statehouse likely to tilt Democratic with both legislative chambers under their control. Gold Democrats seem to have little impact. New York notes mixed results with Republican gains attributed to several districts. Massachusetts gives the GOP about a 65,000 plurality. Boston votes Democratic.
Lord Mayor Tallon of Dublin and Hon John E Redmond M P arrived from Boston to observe how an election is run in New York City on November 8. The visitors traveled to study polling procedures and electoral administration in the bustling metropolis.
Mayor Jones, at 1 p.m. yesterday, conceded his own defeat in Toledo. He said his race did not contribute to Johnny McLean’s success and rejected the administration’s Philippine policy, calling the outcome not in vain.
Aug Wischman and wife Rose were shot by Leona J. Lay, the divorcee and former wife of Wischman. Wischman died at Mercy hospital. Rose remains critically injured. Lay was captured and admitted to being the shooter, citing jealousy as motive.
Bedford Indiana November 6 George Buskirk formerly of Stinesville is said to be in trouble in Central America. Relatives report Buskirk killed a native and was captured by natives who tried to burn him at the stake. He killed two captors and escaped into the woods. Buskirk once ran a saloon and was acquitted of a prior murder. He later moved to Central America to join the lumber trade.
Reports from Estcourt state Friday’s clashes near Ladysmith saw British cavalry and artillery drive Boer forces from position after a storming action. Boers shelled the town with limited damage as British casualties remained light. A later dispatch notes continued fighting and a planned attack on the Forts at Tatham’s farm, with Boers caught in the open and camps captured.
British forces storm hills and pursue retreating Boers, cavalry sweeping the plains behind them. An armored train is sent from Estcourt to Colenso to repair the line, raising hope of restoring communication with Ladysmith. Inside Ladysmith the garrison appears orderly, with prospects of General White’s relief from the siege.
Official report from London transcribes General Buller’s dispatch sent from Cape Town on November 7. The dated message notes the time 12 56 p m and is part of ongoing coverage of the South African campaign.
Dr. M George Gillett of Fond du Lac Wisconsin currently jailed on counts of abusing his aged mother says his arrest is part of a plot to remove him from the scene so another man Guyton can profit from his absence His wife secured a local attorney to represent him.
Tie’s mother aged 73 faces pressure to transfer property to Guyton while Mrs. Gillett insists her husband is safe and will prove it to a physicians committee. Gillett claims ties to a Chicago medical college and his wife backs the assertion after extended jail visits.
Minnesota era mining report will be issued within days. George A Newett completes four year term as Michigan mineral statistician with a comprehensive Lake Superior region properties review. James Russell assumes role, deputizing Horace J Stevens to complete first year’s data. Stevens plans initial publication before year end.
Second Five reports from Kentucky show contested claims as votes range from 000 to 8000 with doubt over outcomes. Shaw leads Iowa by 61,000, Democrats concede around 50,000, Fusion candidate Helcome wins by about 15,000. Republican Nash leads Ohio with about 55,000, latest returns show at least 40,000.
Republican gains marked statewide in Sioux City and Woodbury county with large majorities. A. J. Barkley wins Iowa representative seat by about 200, Geo. Garner takes sheriff race by 400, Shaw likely reaches 1000 in county, J. W. Teeter re elected sheriff of Washington County for a sixth term.

Special to Evening Journal Sigourney reports Charles Laffer elected sheriff by 600 votes. Otumwa notes Shaw with 670 majority. Mt Pleasant sees Geo W McAdam elected county treasurer Putnam sheriff and Campbell likely representative, rest likely Republican. Muscatine tally favors Democratic treasurer and representative. Cedar Rapids notes Jan Aurcher named receiver for National Church Mutual Insurance of Lisbon with liabilities 819000 and assets 40000, blamed on heavy losses and slow collections.
In Burlington Iowa on November 8 Democrats elected the sheriff and treasurer and gained one seat in the state legislature. Republicans secured one legislature seat and the Supervisor position. White’s margin stood at 226 votes.
