Highland Community High School will present a Pops concert Friday November 10 at 8 p.m. Admission is 50 cents for all. The program includes the full band stage band swing group folk singers high school chorus boys and girls vocal groups and several solos and duets.
NBC announced Bonanza will air its final episode in January after a long run as a national viewing institution. The Western series with Ben Cartwright and his sons ends following the loss of original star Dan Blocker and increased competition.
Former President Juan D. Peron will return to Argentina on November 17 to seek a political comeback after 20 years in exile. His delegate Hector J. Campora confirmed the date before the Justicialista Party council, with the party nominating him for president in elections set for next March to restore constitutional democracy. Peron, 77, left Argentina in 1955 after a military coup and has spent 12 years in Spain.
A blaze at the Luther Madrid Co operative grain elevator in Madrid Iowa caused damage estimated at over 150000 dollars. About 50 firefighters from Madrid Boone Slater and Woodward fought the fire discovered between 2 and 3 a.m. and saved one building while most of the grain remained in the half full silo. No cause has yet been determined.
Rep. Larry Larson of Ames critiques the Iowa Development Commission proposal to build multi million dollar resorts near McGregor DeSoto Bend Wildlife Refuge and Lake Rathbun. He warns the plan could turn Iowa parks into commercial ventures and harms public stewardship.
The Iowa Employment Security Commission on a 2-1 vote ruled that DeWitt resident George C. Rekemeyer can be denied unemployment benefits after leaving his job with Ralston-Purina Co. of Clinton over religious beliefs. Rekemeyer, a World Wide Church of God member, will appeal to district court.
City council received updates from Public Works Director Jim Reschly on street repairs and the finalization of this year's street program. Reschly noted soft spots on East Harrison Street to be addressed next spring pending contractor work resumption.
Moscow observed the 55th Bolshevik anniversary with a 10 minute Red Square display of rockets tanks and guns while Defense Minister Grechko spoke of a relaxation of international tension. He warned imperialists remain active and praised steps to strengthen defense as Brezhnev Kosygin and Podgorny watched from the mausoleum with a million civilians following.
Polls across Gallup Harris UPI and other surveys forecast Richard Nixon a strong favorite to win a second term with 80 to 85 million expected voters. McGovern urged patience saying polls lag reality as campaigns press on and turnout nears. Nixon voting plans included a San Clemente schoolhouse stop before White House returns while McGovern votes in Mitchell South Dakota and Sioux Falls respectively.
North Vietnam called Nixon's draft treaty changes unreasonable while Hanoi Radio stopped short of rejecting further discussions. Kissinger urged another session as Saigon papers discuss a potential “secret understanding” to withdraw North Vietnamese forces with guarantees for South Vietnam and allies.

Duane White of Route 1 Ainsworth is chosen to represent Farm Bureau members in Washington County at the 54th Iowa Farm Bureau annual meeting in Des Moines November 27 to 29. He serves as county voting delegate in the state House of Delegates and will join 99 delegates at 8 a.m. November 27 to discuss policy resolutions and participate in elections for state officers district directors and national convention delegates.
Four McGovern campaign workers faced littering charges in Des Moines Municipal Court after leaflets were distributed near the Riveria and River Hills Theaters. Officials debated who bears responsibility for discarded material as theater patrons reportedly threw leaflets on floors and in parking areas. The state McGovern coordinator said lawyers believe political material may be excluded by the city ordinance.
Washington County Extension Council scheduled eight meetings to elect members with nominating committees in each township. Elections begin November 9 in Franklin and Iowa townships, with other dates through November 20. Citizens may attend, as terms are two years with a two-term limit.
