Death of 19 year old linked to carbon monoxide exposure

John Elmore of Cedar Rapids died Friday at Honeymead Products where he worked. Linn county coroner R. E. Munden said poisoning may have contributed and that Elmore apparently strangled after falling from his car, with engine running and lights on when found.

Jefferson Girl Missing After School Absence

Wheeler 13 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Wheeler missing from home after being absent from school due to a chest cold. She was last seen without hat or coat wearing a blue and white short sleeve sweater. Authorities have not located her despite search efforts.

Widow of Long-time Congressman Dead

Mrs. Horace Mann Towner widow of Congressman Horace Mann Towner died in an Alexandria Virginia hospital after months of illness. She hosted visitors at Mount Vernon and served as regent of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association, having moved from Corning Iowa in 1937. Her husband served as Puerto Rico governor 1928 1929 and congressman 1910 1923.

Jackson county grand jury on Friday returned an indictment against Joseph Dunn age 41 of Andrew Iowa for assault with intent to commit murder in the May 2 shooting of 83 year old Frank James during an attempted robbery Dunn is free on $10000 bond

Drunken Driving Fine Of 600 Imposed In Cedar Rapids

Harry Upmier, 64, Ely, Iowa, found guilty of driving while intoxicated. Judge John T. Moffitt fined him 600 dollars and costs after overruling a motion for new trial. Upnier has until November 10 to file an appeal bond of 1000 dollars. county attorney Crissman had sought a 1000 dollar fine and a one year jail sentence.

Car Struck On Rail Line Wrecks 1941 Chevrolet

Everett Schmitt near Washington watched as his 1941 Chevrolet stalled on the crossing after sliding onto a slippery plank. An eastbound Milwaukee local passenger train struck the car, breaking it into scrap metal. Schmitt feared losing a gear for his corn picker and hoped to recover the part soon.

County Officials Enter Navy as War Aims Grow

County Auditor Stanton G Kiesey has enlisted in the United States Navy at Des Moines recruiting station and will report in six to eight weeks. The county board must appoint his replacement, and the county attorney position will also be filled as John Owen joins the navy. Martin to resign as Republican national chairman

Republican national chairman Joseph W. Martin Jr. said he will resign at the December 7 meeting in St. Louis to devote full time to his duties in the House from Massachusetts. He argued the election results show voters want action and that Congress should have a stronger voice in wartime policy. He urged budget cuts, a joint House Senate committee on war oversight, and auditors for appropriations, while noting limited White House contact since Pearl Harbor.

Pilot Training Class Organized At Washington Airport

A new pilot training class at Washington airport and junior college starts next Monday. Ten navy men and three army air force men enrollments are listed with names and hometowns. four more of the 26 previous trainees are assigned to secondary training, with others sent to Muscatine and to Iowa.

Renew Chauffeurs Licenses In Washington County

Fort Cummings of the state highway patrol announced renewals for chauffeurs licenses will begin November 16 in the state. Examinations to renew truck drivers licenses in Washington county start November 21, the first day Cummings will be there after the 16th. Renewals may be done in another county until November 21, with additional renewal dates December 5 and 19 when he returns for tests.

Americans Repulse Attacks on Guadalcanal Thriving Move

American forces defending Henderson Field on Guadalcanal advanced several miles to the east and repulsed enemy attacks to the west. The light resistance east of the field aided preparations to thwart a pincers drive by curbing enemy forces from both sides.

Local Red Cross Surgical Dressing Classes Open

About 65 local women attended the Red Cross surgical dressing classes in city hall this week. Classes run 1 30 to 4 30 Wednesday Thursday and Friday afternoons and Thursday evening 7 to 9 30. Workers pack dressings into 600 lots totaling 1 200 dressings and more help is sought to reach a county quota of 41 000 for November and December.
