President Kennedy Opens Talks With Nehru in RI Welcome

President Kennedy personally greeted Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in Newport Rhode Island to begin talks on world peace and other issues. The leaders rode to Hammersmith Farm for a private lunch as a Navy band played and Indian students greeted Nehru. Discussions would continue in Washington on Tuesday and Thursday.

Welfare Conference Slated This Week Des Moines

The Des Moines welfare conference runs November 8 to 10 with the theme New Frontiers in Meeting Human Needs. Washington County welfare staff will attend all sessions and Sam Don Wine will speak at the Thursday luncheon, presided by Mrs Payne Marshall who leads the adult and family service division.

Trainee in Extension Office Advances in Home Economics Work

Carol Lindsay of Marcus Iowa begins a two month tour as home economics trainee in Washington County Extension Service. Missene completes three months training in Grundy County focusing on 4H work. Lindsay taught in Marathon Iowa last year and is an Iowa State University graduate.

Iowa Liquor Sales Reach All Time High in 1961

Iowa Liquor Control Commission reports net sales of 44.36 million for the year ending June 1961, up 23 percent from 1960, while profits declined to 10.445 million from 1.539 million the previous year. Increased store count to 18, modernization, equipment purchases, and raises contributed to higher costs.

Stores to stay open Saturday Veterans Day in Washington

Washington retail stores are expected to remain open on Veterans Day November 11 after a recommendation from the Washington Chamber of Commerce retail trade committee. The panel also urged early Saturday closing in January and February, noting other cities will keep shops open on the holiday in question.

School Dance Band to Play at Mt Pleasant Institute

A newly formed high school dance band will perform at the State Mental Health Institute in Mt Pleasant on November 30. The ensemble includes students from the regular bands and is directed by Alan Bergstrom. Funds from student fundraisers support trips and the Christmas concert at Mt Pleasant in December.

Career Day Held At Washington County High School

Washington County hosts the annual Career and College Day with students from area high schools visiting conferences in the morning and meeting university and technical school representatives in the afternoon. Washington High School juniors and seniors must attend and interested sophomores are invited. No regular classes will be held that day.

Hamburger Bean Feed Cookout Planned at YMCA

A hamburger bean feed cookout and bicycle hike for boys is scheduled at the YMCA next Saturday. Transportation is provided for boys without bicycles, and attendees must register by 10 a.m. Saturday. a small fee is charged.

Congo commando units arrest 132 soldiers over Luluabourg assaults

UPI reports Congolese commandos captured 132 regular army members for rapes and beatings in Luluabourg. European women and four Catholic nuns were attacked during Nov 1 2 outbreaks. about 400 Europeans sought UN protection as the garrison flights resumed to Leopoldville. One pregnant woman allegedly raped multiple times.

Scottish Steamer Clan Keith Explodes and Sinks at Sea

The 7129 ton Scottish steamer Clan Keith carrying 68 crew exploded in heavy seas off the Tunisian coast. Sixty were missing and eight rescued. bodies were seen floating. British and Finnish ships rescued several, with 61 still missing and one confirmed dead. The explosion occurred at 6 30 pm local time with the ship sinking after midnight.
