President Kennedy personally greeted Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in Newport Rhode Island to begin talks on world peace and other issues. The leaders rode to Hammersmith Farm for a private lunch as a Navy band played and Indian students greeted Nehru. Discussions would continue in Washington on Tuesday and Thursday.

Scottish Steamer Clan Keith Explodes and Sinks at Sea
The 7129 ton Scottish steamer Clan Keith carrying 68 crew exploded in heavy seas off the Tunisian coast. Sixty were missing and eight rescued. bodies were seen floating.
