In Des Moines about 20 000 idle tires turned in by owners with more than five tires per car are being graded and stored. Government payments follow grade ceilings, but chief inspector C K Young warns many submitters will be surprised by their checks since over half the tires are plain scrap worth 20 cents each.
Oskaloosa, David Elmer Brewer, 25, of Peoria Illinois, who entered the police station claiming to be an escaped convict and draft dodger seeking service, lost the first round of his bid for a Mississippi pardon. FBI notes confirmed Gov. Paul Johnson refused the pardon needed for him to join the armed forces.
Iowa City authorities seek to identify a soldier alleged to have attempted to abduct Claudyne Smith of Iowa City. She said she rode with him for a period before he announced plans to take her to Kansas City. Near Coralville she jumped from his moving car. she recalls nothing until police found her.
Ottumwa teacher Charles McClain age 30 was found guilty of disorderly conduct and jailed three days after being accused of window peeping at a south Ottumwa home. The accused remained in jail until police arrived and he pledged a $100 appeal bond. He had taught in several southern Iowa schools before joining Ottumwa this year.
Cedar Rapids Iowa Governor-elect B B Hick received a telegram from Douglas Miller 81, Wilson administration messenger, praising the ammunition as they celebrate. Miller, born into slavery, once headed the Kirkwood Hotel Des Moines and served as governor's messenger since 1913 under George W Clarke.
Martin Birrer of Riverside Iowa turns 100 on November 12 after migrating from Alsace Lorraine France with his parents in 1845. He married Christine Brockman on November 12 1867 and raised twelve children. A former farmer and carpenter he served as justice of the peace and held local offices. The family will host open houses 3 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm at the Mellecker home north of Riverside.
President Roosevelt stated at a press conference that the large Republican victory in the election should not alter his stance toward Congress. He said Congress aims to win the war as much as he does and noted ongoing meetings with lawmakers from both parties.
In a Moscow speech marking a Red Revolution anniversary, Joseph Stalin said a second front in Europe would come sooner or later, not by choice but because Allies understand its vital importance. He cited German deployments and urged unity with Britain and the Allies. He vowed to destroy the new European order and to publish the names of Nazi criminals.

At the regular Legion meeting John Balinski of Sigourney will be the main speaker at the annual Armistice banquet for Legion members. The event remains a prominent postwar tradition started after World War I by the Legion Auxiliary.

UP Chairman Donald M Nelson told the senate military affairs committee that the nation must conserve manpower by a longer work week and higher productivity. He urged standards for manpower authority and said absenteeism from Monday morning sickness and payroll sickness should be reduced.
Des Moines published enlistment notices listing Ernest C Flickinger of Washington among new Army recruits. The brief entry confirms his service start and hometown connected to the Des Moines selection segment.
President Roosevelt called the North Africa battle a victory of major importance and cited declining German war production due to longer workweeks. He noted Allied gains hearten the United Nations and clarified Guadalcanal operations were limited in scope. He rejected the idea that American equipment dominated Montgomery’s Eighth Army. Floyd Grecian of West Chester pleaded guilty to assault and battery arraigned before Justice J. Bovee this morning. He was fined $25 plus costs on the charge involving Supt. J. L. Calkins of the West Chester consolidated school on a West Chester street today.
