John Kern, 62, a farmer near Shelby, is in serious condition at Jennie Edmundson hospital after a loaded wagon broke loose and ran over him.
Newton report states Gale Morelock, 15, was walking along railroad tracks when he dropped his rifle from an overhead bridge. He leaned to look and fell about 20 feet, suffering a slight concussion and cracked ribs. Son of Ora Morelock.
Winners of the annual fall poetry contest announced at a Iowa State Poetry Society meeting. Named prize recipients include Eleanore White Iowa City Mayor Moore Des Moines Ray Kresensky Zatha Wilson Weems Gaylen Shannon Sadie Seagrave Oakdale Henriette Wolff Ionia with two prize placements.
Cincinnati youth Jamer Kk. Lowe, 19, used a .22 rifle to shoot and kill a 30 pound golden eagle. The carcass measured 76 inches across the wings. He heard the bird while watering cattle near his home, then retrieved a gun. A similar eagle was previously captured at Kellyville Missouri, 15 miles south of the Lowe farm.
DES MOINES June 23 James Henry Welch 23 of Des Moines and his bride Cleo Lucille Allen were found dead in a tent at a San Francisco suburb auto court. Coroner William P Crosby said both deaths were due to carbon monoxide circulating from a heater. Autopsy confirmed carbon monoxide in Welch blood.
Arvid Dettman aged 17 of Burt farm died from a bullet wound to the neck that penetrated the spinal cord. He had been paralyzed since the accident and was found wounded beside a fence by his father, Paul Dettman. Authorities believe the .22 caliber rifle discharged as he climbed the fence.
Harold Templeman of Cedar Rapids won the Iowa State Teachers association presidency with 106 votes to 97 for Miss Helen Kintzinger of Dubuque. He becomes the first man to hold the post. Uncontested yearly officers were Elvira Peterson of Mason City, El Bertha Wellhausen of Sioux City, and Grace Gabriel of Des Moines.
The state and North Western railway spent thousands to create a grade crossing at Highway 71 in Audubon, replacing a viaduct with only a 9-foot clearance. Despite a warning sign Low Bridge, trucks repeatedly struck the span, killing one sleeper in a truck box and causing animals and cargo to be scattered along the road.

Winter swept the Atlantic seaboard from Maine to Florida with snow and high winds. The deep south saw sub freezing temperatures as a gale accompanied storm disrupted New England and upper New York with three inches of snow. New Hampshire and Vermont reported sleet and snow while Virginia bore 15 to 20 inches of snow closing roads.
Norway rejected a German protest over the release of the American freighter City of Flint and its crew. The ship is expected to depart Haugesund with its cargo, as Norway argues Germany had no legal claim after the prize crew took the ship. Captain Gainard said the ship followed orders to enter port for medical care.
Martha Timmerman, entering her third year as an elementary teacher in Washington schools, resigned yesterday to Supt. BE Ralston and returned to Waterloo. Mrs. Dan Brindley substitutes in grades four to six at the new Stewart school while a replacement is found. Ralston said her work was satisfactory and she gave no reason beyond finding it impossible to continue.
Power and communication lines were down in the Blue Ridge mountains and Shenandoah valley. Train and bus schedules were halted and motorists were marooned.
Mrs. Rose Reid announces a list of about 200 men and women to join this year’s Red Cross membership drive to begin this week. Volunteers cover Washington city wards, county towns, and rural districts with a kickoff dinner set for Tuesday at the Presbyterian church. The drive runs through Thanksgiving with most work to be done this week, and county chair Roger Sherman will lead a program featuring a St. Louis Red Cross representative.

Increasing national prosperity may lift farmers to a new high for nearly a decade. The Agriculture Department foresees farmers gaining up to 700 million dollars in 1940 due to wartime demand and higher farm product shipments abroad. It expects cash farm income to return near 1937 levels, with 1939 cash income around 5.3 billion.
Governor George A. Wilson proclaimed Thursday November 30 as Thanksgiving Day in Iowa. He said the action follows American and Iowa traditions and notes abundant cause for gratitude this year, disregarding President Roosevelt’s earlier November 23 date.

A Boston to Chicago express derailed near Westfield Massachusetts injuring twelve of its sixty two passengers. The locomotive tender and nine cars left the rails and overturned but stopped before plunging down a twenty foot embankment.
In Moscow at a communist rally the Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov reaffirmed Soviet neutrality and said no effort to draw the Soviet Union into war can succeed. The event closed day one of a three day anniversary celebration and issued a manifesto urging workers to halt the war and opposing U S arms embargo repeal. He cited U S interference and warned the conflict was spreading globally while claiming the Soviet Union keeps the peace.
Northboro pastor Rev. G. Ky Wiencke Jr. and his bride escaped Germany with a passport misread by a German official. The U S consulate had sent the document which the official misinterpreted as Mister and Madame, allowing their departure to New Orleans amid wartime chaos.
Health Officer Dr D C Barerett announces Tuesday vaccination sites in Wellman Katona and West Chester with vaccines for smallpox and diphtheria. Doctors McLaughlin Miller Pry Ware will administer vaccines aided by county nurse Thelma Luther and Dr C Barrett. The effort targets rural children with low vaccination rates. Red Cross will cover costs for those unable to pay 50 cents.
