Edward Scott Holler starts a two and a half year term today after release from federal prison. Federal agents allege that after freedom he stole nine pigs from a state farm and paid seven men with bad checks to help move them to market.
An Air Force C47 carrying eight men crashed into the Connecticut River near Holyoke Massachusetts during a rain storm. Four survivors, including Navy Captain Henry C. Nichols, swam to shore in cold, swollen water. Rescue crews searched banks overnight as officials prepared for helicopter and plane aid.
Robert Dale Lyons, 24, Clinton laborer, was ordered to enter a plea by Tuesday on a charge of raping a 14 year old babysitter. The girl identified Lyons as her attacker after a man forced her at gunpoint from the Ellis home Tuesday night. Lyons is held on a $25,000 bond.
Rev John Brown of Madrid Iowa will continue special services at the Cottonwood EUB church two miles west of Wayland for another week, closing the series on November 13. Brown speaks each evening at 7 30 pm except Saturdays per Pastor Wesley Lowry.
Anamosa Iowa Archie Burkey a former marshal was found innocent of murdering his two year old son by a district court jury that ruled he was insane when the crime occurred The jury deliberated ten hours before verdict Judge Floyd Philbrick thanked the jurors after the late night ruling Burkey had been deemed insane in February 1954 and later found sane before a third sanity hearing October 18. A fourth hearing was denied October 28 with a notice of appeal filed with the Iowa Supreme Court.
Washington voters will decide on November 8 whether to issue 100000 in bonds to fund a municipal swimming pool site and construction. The plan demands a tax levy of 1.23 per 1000 of assessed valuation, with an estimated 25 cents monthly per home. The pool layout includes a main 50 by 110 feet pool plus wading and beginners pools with filtration systems.
Reports from Jerusalem and Cairo describe a two day clash over the El Sabha outpost in the El Auja zone with Egypt claiming victory and Israeli casualties and captures. Israel cites Egyptian troop limits and U N observers amid ongoing ceasefire tensions.

The Washington Holiday Decoration Committee met Friday night led by Bill Sitler to advance downtown Christmas displays. Sitler urged additional gifts this week and volunteers for erection duties, with a November 15 ordering deadline for evergreen roping and a December 2 realization target. The fund list includes 36 donors and prominent firms, with corrections to an earlier listing.
William J. McGiffin, 62, millionaire publisher, died of a heart attack in Palm Springs California while on vacation. He headed W J McGiffin Co owner of Fort Madison Democrat and former owner of Fairfield Shenandoah and Spencer papers. He lived in Huntington Park California and had stakes in Arizona Sun Flagstaff and Excelsior Springs Standard. He recently sold papers at Spencer Iowa Brainard Minnesota and Pawhuska Oklahoma and had an interest in Norwich Publishing Co.
The Washington County Tuberculosis and Health Association held a workshop at the Nurses Home to assemble 6595 letters and Christmas seals. Twenty five women organized and sorted mail for a November 16 send, aiding the county TB and Heart associations.
James A Longer, a farm resident southwest of Washington, was found dead Friday evening at his home. Notes in the house suggest suicide by shooting. coroner Dr. W. S. Kyle was called. Longer lived alone. funeral services set for Monday at Jones funeral home.
Mrs. Lloyd Marek of Washington will be the speaker at the Ainsworth APT meeting. The event is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Tuesday November 8.
Over 600 persons visited the Eclipse Lumber Company open house this week in Washington. The new home at 300 East Eleventh Street was fully equipped and furnished through local firms with the lumber company coordinating the event. Door prizes were won by Mrs. Ed Hartman, Mrs. George Jarrard, Mrs. Don Custer, and Mrs. Rush Helwick.
The week of November 6 to 12 is set for American Education Week, the 35th national observance. Themes include Your Investment in Teachers and Your Investment in a Stronger Nation, with open houses at Washington schools on November 7 Lincoln School and Stewart School events, plus Junior High on November 8 and High School on November 7.

Ira McGowan Sproull, 84, died in Honolulu on November 3 after a short illness. Born in Freeport, Pennsylvania, he lived in Washington, Wayland, Waterloo, and Los Angeles where he served in banking. Survivors include two sons, Harry Keck Sproull and Henry Franklin Sproull. wife Eda Rebecca Samson predeceased him. Graveside services in Washington await word from Honolulu.

A car bomb killed former labor racketeer William Willie Bioff in Phoenix as investigators blamed mobsters seeking revenge. Bioff had been an informer in Capone-era cases.
Masked gunmen shouted trick or treat and fled with 25 000 to 30 000 from the Maywood Proviso State Bank. Three robbers covered faces with blue stockings while others looted cash drawers and a Cadillac getaway car sped away at high speed as alarms sounded and police arrived seconds too late.

George F. Foster, 82, of 327 East Washington street, died at 5 10 p m Friday November 4 after three years of declining health. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Monday at Jones funeral home with Rev Milan Thompson and Dr Walter Scheuermann presiding. Burial at Elm Grove cemetery. Born September 18, 1873 near Freeport Indiana he moved to Iowa as a child and studied in Washington county schools. He married Myrtle Anderson March 2 1898 and lived in Washington since 1940. Surviving: Myrtle, a daughter Mrs Earl Galloway of Washington, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was a Bethel Presbyterian Church member and formerly farmed north of Washington.
