Robert L. Smith the first Korean War quadruple amputee expressed joy over the birth of his son Don Eugene in Washington. Smith who lost both hands above the wrists and both legs above the ankles in 1950 underwent nine operations at Walter Reed before receiving artificial limbs. He and Barbara Brom, who met during his hospital stay, wed in 1952 and now live in Takoma Park Maryland.

The Dutch Creek community met Saturday evening at the school house with seven families present. In Trieste two Italians were killed and 12 seriously injured as police fired over the heads of a protesting crowd demanding Trieste be returned to Italy. The dead included a 16 year old student and an older man. rioters hurled bricks as police used jeeps and water hoses.

A powerfully built Belgian farmhand Camille Joseph Van Laeth killed six people in a two hour rampage in a village. He attacked three elderly couples in their homes with a long knife and a heavy hammer before dying in a public safety incident and likely being killed by a mob as villagers say he took his own life.
