Plane Crashes Take Toll of Seventy Dead or Missing

United Press reports seventy Americans were dead or missing across five world crashes. B 29 losses left 31 dead. 38 missing aboard Navy planes and a Pacific Alaska liner. Additional incidents include a B 29 crash in the Azores and another near Manchester England. a DC 5 missing from Sitka to Seattle. a Navy Privateer lost near Bristol Bay. and a long range patrol aircraft missing after Puget Sound maneuvers.

Hike for grade school boys postponed to tomorrow

The all grade school boys hike scheduled for this morning has been postponed until tomorrow at 11 30. Art Brown Y secretary announced the change. Boys will meet at the Y M C A tomorrow and depart if the weather permits.

Fire destroys room in Anderson home hits Dick’s study

Dick Anderson, a Washington high school student, loses his own furnishings typewriter and personal effects in a Tuesday morning house fire. Mrs Vera Anderson was alone when the blaze started, firefighters saved the rest of the home and prevented spread. Some family clothing was damaged or lost.

Yoder Observing 12th Anniversary at East End Grocery

Today November 5 marks the twelfth business anniversary of F. J. Yoder at Yoder's East End grocery. He purchased the store from the J. E. County Discusses Corn Loan Program Agreement

Banks and lending agents from Washington and nearby counties met the AAA committee at the local YMCA on Thursday to outline the commodity loan process for oats wheat soybeans and corn. County AAA chairman Howard A Witting reports loans already made and urges applications through the county office or local corn sealer, listing appointed officials across several townships.

Rejections Rise as Iowa Draftees Face Medical and Mental Standards

Des Moines Iowa November draft notices show about six percent of the first 410 Iowa draftees rejected. In a 12 state area 2080 of 6185 examined were acceptable with 48 percent failing physicals and the rest failing mental tests. Most who qualified for November were later deferred for domestic or occupational reasons. The 175 Lowans begin induction November 18 or 19.

Gillette Calls for Taft Hartley Amendments

U S Senator elect Guy Gillette urged amendments to the Taft Hartley act saying its discriminating provisions create barriers to labor equality. He did not specify changes but argued the law must secure labor’s right to bargain as a group and achieve parity in bargaining with employers.

Chiang Appeals for U S Help as Communists Close In

Nanking faces a pincers offensive as 200000 communist troops near Hsuchow and 240 miles south threaten the Nanking corridor. Premier Wong Wen-Hao urges further U S aid and notes 900 dependents evacuated from Shanghai to date with 4000 more set to depart. Generalissimo Chiang concentrates 500000 loyalist troops along the Hsuchow Nanking line. U S warships remain deployed at Tsingtao.

Youth Center Closes November 6 Plans New Hall Opening

Washingtons Youth Center will close Saturday evening November 6 announced by Mrs. Golia Miller. Work on the new hall over MacLellans store progresses rapidly with hopes to have it ready for next Saturday and further opening announcements will follow.

Patrolman Strater Enlists in U S Army

Patrolman Harley Strater, longtime Washington state highway patrolman, has left Washington for Camp Carson Colorado to report for active duty as a first lieutenant. He serves with the state patrol on leave and expects no immediate successor. Mrs Strater will stay in Washington until his assignment is settled. Strater previously served in World War II and chose to return to active duty.

Eight Froma County Draft Examees Travel to Davenport

Washington county men traveled to Davenport for pre induction physicals in the second draft group. Those leaving include Everett Parson of Brighton Lester Gardner Lowell Burden Gailen Reighard Everette Evans Mervin Hudson Marvin Buck of Ainsworth and Dwayne Schneider of Riverside. Eligibility hinges on these examinations under peacetime draft terms.

Snowstorms batter South Dakota and Mississippi areas

Northern Black Hills and Lead Deadwood regions report heavy snow with drifts four to five feet and 18 inch depths in towns. Hunters stranded in cabins but likely provisions. Mississippi storms kill five and injure at least 23, smashing homes near Benton and Ripley in a tornado-like wind event.

Seven Youths Enlist in Army and Air Force

Charles L Anson of Washington announced that many local youths are joining the armed forces. Three from Columbus Junction, Eddie Griffin Dale Sill Jr and James Van Auken, headed to Ft. Riley Kansas for basic training. Henry H Funston of Keota joined the air force at Lackland Air Base San Antonio. This week Raymond Watson Jr of 816 West Monroe Street and Richard A Riley and Charles R Curl of Brighton enlisted. Watson goes to Texas for air force training, Riley to Ft. Riley, Curl to Ft. Riley after three years in the navy and enlistment in the engineers.
