Senator Clyde L. Herring of Iowa said in Des Moines he will not run again after his term ends January 3. He plans to return home and may enter business, stating he loves business more than politics and is grateful for Iowa voters’ support during a decade in public office.
Two local boys aged 9 and 10 admitted to police they set fires to two Burlington warehouses Tuesday night causing about $10,000 in damage. They told officers they started the blaze to watch it burn and also confessed a prior garage fire. The Tuesday fire began in baled paper at the Iowa Hideo Junk Co. building and spread to the Chittenden and Hastman Co. Wire house.
Cedar Rapids council authorized the mayor and clerk to exercise options on land for a new million dollar military airport nine miles southeast of the city. CAA engineer M. H. Price arrived to begin surveying as crews and appraisers are expected today. Salvage value from farm improvements on seven sites is estimated at 7000 to 10000 dollars, per City Attorney Dou Hines.
Lieut. Col. William P. Rawles assigned executive officer at the Iowa ordnance plant in Burlington. He joins Col. James I. Crawford as successor to Maj. Carl G. Paulsen, transferred to Washington. Rawles previously served in the chief of ordnance office in Washington and in the resources division of the services of supply.
Three deans were nominated today for president of the Iowa State Teachers Association. They are Dr J Edward Kirkpatrick dean of the college of education at Morningside College Thomas C Ruggles dean of Centerville Junior College and Dean Paul Packer of the University of Iowa. The election will be by secret ballot between 8 and 11 am tomorrow. J C Wright superintendent of Keokuk was nominated for the executive committee member without opposition. About 5000 teachers opened the convention this morning.
The Pearl Harbor battle phrase tied to Navy chaplain Lieut Howell Forgy is explained. Captain William Maguire denied coining the expression and did not man a gun during Pearl Harbor. The line is traced to Civil War origins rather than shipboard action.
Martin leads with over 21,000 votes as counties report results. Otto totals show 63,521 to 32,032, giving Martin a 21,489 vote majority with four precincts uncounted.
Names James Albert Schmoel ler and Wallace Perry Nordyke listed among those announced to Des Moines as enlisting in the army.

Tickets are available at multiple local businesses and from firemen until Armistice day. after that at the door. Chuck Coffee and his band provide music for the nine o clock event. proceeds support the fire department death fund.
Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson criticized a Senate amendment to restrict 18 and 19 year olds in combat. He warned such limits would shackle the commander in chief and cited Pearl Harbor while noting battles to come next week.

United Press reports that General Ritter Van Thoma, commander of the African corps, has been captured, raising German generals prisoner in north Africa to at least four. Italian losses are far higher, with Axis forces claiming more than six times that many. About 13 British and Imperial generals are likely prisoners, while Italians say they have taken three more.
Mayor R L Lytle endorses the 10th annual VFW Buddy Poppy sale in Washington on November 7. He urges public support, linking the red flowers to veterans’ sacrifices in World War II and Armistice Day honors. The mayor proclaims November 7 as Buddy Poppy Day.
Lubic-Gas promotes its new product by bringing the famous Camel Car to Washington for a single appearance on Friday November 6. The car is advertised as operating without a radiator, a cooling fan, or motor sticking issues and supposedly without overheating.
Vice President Henry A. Wallace said after a White House visit he was surprised a Republican House wasn’t elected given the light turnout and many voters serving in the armed forces. He blamed the slugging vote gap on the well to do and the armed services.
Rainfall reached .58 of an inch by seven this morning according to the official local weather observer. Some additional rainfall occurred this forenoon, continuing an unsettled spell.
George M. Cohan the Yankee Doodle Dandy who wrote Over There died in New York at 5 a.m. after more than a year of illness following an intestinal operation. A famed wartime songwriter, Cohan achieved enduring fame for his patriotic songs and stage work.
Secretary of Agriculture Claude Wickard urged the senate military affairs committee to grant occupation draft deferrals to all farm workers and block war plants with government contracts from hiring them. He warned that 1,600,000 farmers left last year and further losses would sap agricultural output. If another 1,600,000 depart, the U S may not feed allies.
Funeral services for Samuel Conrad of Wayland will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the Conrad home. He died Monday evening about eight o'clock following a heart attack.

F G Bagge takes over as manager of the Karl May seed store in State Center replacing Paul Sorton who left Tuesday for the U S Navy. Bagge came from Marshalltown where he ran the May store and previously headed the Winterset location. He stays at Congress hotel temporarily with Mrs Bagge and their daughter who attends second grade. Mrs Bagge teaches music and the Gordons returned to Clarinda.
