Nome Alaska Swept by a Huge Tidal Wave

A massive uncharged surf struck Nome Alaska flooding streets and inundating two houses and fifteen cabins. Several schooners were wrecked or cast ashore while water reached far inland. No lives were lost but many had narrow escapes as residents cared for the homeless. Some speculate submarine volcanic action or a solar eclipse as causes.

Violent Submarine quake Triggers Nome Coastal Flooding

A submarine earthquake or volcanic eruption caused a great tidal wave that flooded Nome Alaska on November 5. The wave wrecked shipping and coastal structures but caused no deaths. Ninety lowland residents lost their belongings and barely survived as waves carried small coastwise vessels inland.
