Farmers statewide report over half the corn harvested with many fields yielding above average. Some counties say up to 90 percent of the crop has been harvested by machines and yields exceed 100 bushels per acre in several localities.
Unofficial results from 2,176 of 2,464 precincts show Wilson leading for president with 360,642 votes and Herring at 257,457. In the governor race Hickenlooper has 380,637 to Kraschel 225,438. State supreme court seats shift as Democrat judges lose. Republican winners include H. J. Manse John E. Meroney and W. A. Smith. Hart and the remaining GOP candidates are noted as elected by large margins, with one Democrat unsuccessful.
Mr and Mrs Franked Young and Carl Young of Ottumwa were held Tuesday for larceny of domestic fowls after their Monday night arrest. Deputies took them after a report of shot chickens at Charles Palmer farm. A south Ottumwa accident occurred during the arrest. Bond was set at 500 each, with a preliminary hearing Friday.
J B Wilson 65 former bakery owner died at a hospital from injuries suffered when his clothing was torn and he was dragged into a corn picker at his farm two miles north of Superior. Lawrence Reinisch, who assisted, shut off the machine. Survived by wife a son and a daughter.
Washington county superintendents held their regular meeting at West Chester yesterday evening. They attended the election day net at the Chester Methodist church and conducted their business session afterward. Town home economics teachers also met, focusing on their nutrition program.
Washington county rationing board announces November quotas for tires with passenger tires 7 grade two, passenger retreads 151, truck and light truck tires 31, tractor and implement tires 31, retreads 13, tubes 22. Passenger retread quota up for increase. applicants urged to apply now if tires are 65 percent worn, in fair condition, cords not broken. retreading allowed with two small breaks or cuts.
Tomorrow a county wide scrap metal drive around Washington aims to gather all loose metal from farms not secured on October 6. Teams meet 7:30 AM at the east side of the square, with eight o'clock departure into the countryside. Men and trucks, including nonbusiness volunteers, are urged to participate. more trucks and cars are requested to handle heavier pieces.
W S Eldridge and Benjamin Coppock won the Republican tickets for justice of the peace in Washington city yesterday. J Bovee, long in office, ran on the Democratic ticket and placed third, with two seats to be filled. Eldridge secured 1334 votes Coppock 1194 Bovee 652.
W J Law of Ardmore Oklahoma died at 5 20 pm Sunday in an Ardmore hospital after years of illness. He earlier lived in Washington where he ran a jewelry business before moving to Oskaloosa and then Oklahoma to work as a bank cashier and in real estate. Survived by wife Dora Bell and three daughters, including Mrs Theodore Landgras of Ardmore, and a grandson Ted in US service. Also notes San Marino has been at war since 1915 with Germany until Sept 17 1940 when it declared war on Great Britain.
Republicans won with Gov Wilson for senator Hickenlooper for governor and Tom Martin for congress leading by about 2000 votes in Washington county as total votes exceeded 6000. The constitutional amendment passed 4565 to 492 and many county offices went unopposed with votes listed for each candidate.
Allied reports say the Imperial Eighth Army presses Rommel's Axis forces in the western desert with a large armored engagement described as the largest fought in North Africa. Montgomery's and Rommel's armored divisions clash while retreat attempts unfold along the coastal road. The outcome remains uncertain as losses mount.
Ralph Scott of the Scott Furniture company offers his store for the Buddy Poppy sales headquarters on Saturday November 7. Young volunteers will canvass Washington streets with the familiar phrase Good morning Will you buy your Buddy poppy from me. The Buddy Poppy movement began in 1922 as the VFW memorial flower with poppies made by disabled veterans in government hospitals since 1924 under government aides. The badge is protected by a U S patent office copyright and bears the VFW label. Mrs Alice Palmer is general chairman of poppy sales this year.
Republican net gains in wartime general elections on November 4 rose to at least 32 House seats eight Senate seats and two governorships as partial returns favored Republicans in states including New York Iowa Nebraska Oklahoma Wyoming South Dakota New Jersey and Michigan. Senate stayed Democratic and Wisconsin elects a progressive governor while Idaho outcome remained unsettled. Dewey won New York governor by about half a million.
Early returns from 233 of 291 precincts show Congressman Tom Martin ahead of Vern Nall by more than 17 000 votes. The tally from those precincts stands 43 156 to 26 102 in favor of Martin as late results arrive.
