McClellan defeats incumbent Mayor Low by a large plurality across most boroughs, with Devery drawing weak support on an independent line. Grout and Fornes secure key city offices. Low telegrams McClellan offering support. Queens turnout notable with Shepard’s narrow margin.
Across major cities and states on November 4, results show McClellan carrying Manhattan and the Bronx by about 638 thousand votes with gains in Brooklyn and Queens, totaling roughly 105 thousand more votes than Shepard. Other cities report Republican leads or close races for governor and state offices.
Early returns show Governor Bates re-elected with similar plurality to last year as Republicans hold the balance of power. The ticket mostly wins across the state, with gains in small towns offset by Democratic strength in cities. Republicans retain a five to one governor’s council, while New Jersey races hint at a split assembly and a Republican senate.

In New York only contest of note. Seth Low the fusionist candidate was defeated by George McClelland the Tammany nominee by a large plurality.
A court martial found Brigadier General Doblin Chase guilty of disobedience of orders and sentenced him dishonorably, but Governor Peabody is expected to commute the sentence to a reprimand. In Breubenville Ohio three Austrian laborers were struck and killed by a westbound train along the Panhandle track. The victims are named Metovein Cowbovie Peter Metrovich and Metovern Totur.
Early state returns indicate a drop in overall vote on the state ticket with signs of Cummins achieving a substantial plurality of at least sixty thousand.
Returns from Kentucky indicate Governor J C W Beckham reelected by a conservatively estimated 14 000 majority. The vote was heavy and returns are slow.
Reports from nine additional precincts show a Democratic gain of 208 votes as the slow counting continues and a final election outcome remains unclear.
Richmond Virginia November 4 Democratic candidates won across the state delivering a sweeping victory for the party in the assembly races with a decisive margin reported.
The overdue steamship Ovalon from Norfolk Island arrived at Lord Howe Island on October 19 with a forehold fire. Passengers and crew were landed at night, and the next morning an explosion wrecked the ship causing it to sink. News reached Noumea via a Messagerie Pacific steamer.
