City workmen put up several of Washington's new Christmas light decorations along the business district poles. The plan slows now to ensure brackets and ions are ready. Decorations are slated for Thanksgiving readiness with Chamber of Commerce funding via special gifts from members.
Duane White of Ainsworth will serve as Farm Bureau voting delegate for Washington county at the 53rd Iowa Farm Bureau annual meeting in Des Moines November 15 to 17. He sits in the House of Delegates which frames policy and elects officers.
Mrs Ralph Dickinson of Brighton is hospitalized in Waterloo for injuries from a collision six miles north of Dysart on Highway 21. Chris Mineart of Washington, a Washington High student, is treated for chipped vertebrae in Washington County Hospital. Four Washington High students were en route from Cedar Falls after Prospective Teachers Day. two girls suffered bruises while Mrs Dickinson faces elbow shoulder arm surgery.
A Democratic gubernatorial hopeful pledged to seek legislation that would bar publishing names of individuals receiving any form of public assistance in Iowa.
Jody Smith, 19, becomes Ayrshire's new mayor after defeating incumbent E B Swanson 83 to 39. A Emmetsburg Junior College freshman, he bused children to school and attends classes, with his mother noting voters sought change and better streets.
Clarence J. Brown defeated Maynard L. Brown 416 to 157 for councilman at large as votes were light. Riverside and other towns saw mixed results with women candidates mostly unsuccessful, incumbents re-elected, and voters rejecting a four year mayor term and staggered council terms.
Davenport voters elect Katherine Kirschbaum Democrat as the city's first woman mayor. Democrats gain seven of ten city council seats, Powell Owens becomes Davenport's first Black council member, while Republican incumbents mostly hold seats. Cedar Falls names Jon Crews mayor amid anti freeway shift. Cedar Rapids rejects two censured judges despite mayoral edge.
Lt. Gov. Roger Jepsen said he is optimistic about winning Iowa’s governorship in 1972 despite polls showing him behind Gov. Robert D. Ray. He outlined campaign plans focused on organization and a June primary, speaking after a Town State Education Association forum in Washington. Former Insurance Commissioner Lorne Worthington urged collective bargaining for teachers and criticized merit pay linking wages to test results, calling it discriminatory.
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird and Adm. Thomas Moorer arrived in Saigon to report on Vietnamization and troop withdrawals as U S forces completed the pullout from Fire Base Pace near the Cambodian border. The leaders met Gen. Creighton Abrams and other officials ahead of Nixon speeches on withdrawal plans.

Governor Robert Ray announced the appointment of Michael Enich a 93 year old Grinnell attorney as district judge for the Sixth judicial district. The term begins November 11 and runs until December 31 1974 succeeding Judge Harold Fleck who retires after serving since January 1 1959. Enich a Boone native and University of Iowa law school alumnus was Poweshiek County attorney 1966 1970 and is active in bar associations and local clubs. The district includes Jasper Keokuk Mahaska Poweshiek and Washington Counties.
