Citizens Party sweeps area elections in Washington

The Citizens Party led by incumbent mayor Cloid Willits won Washington’s local races as 800 voters cast ballots. Winners include Mayor Cloid Willits and council members Wayne Davis Paul Gebhardt Harold Stephens and Ray Watson along with park commissioner. Local results highlight near record turnout in several towns with parties contesting for mayor and council.

Lindsay Upsets Republicans in New York Mayoral Race

UPI reports Rep. John V. Lindsay delivered the GOP its largest lift since Eisenhower by showing Democrats could be ousted from New York City Hall. The Democratic gains in New Jersey and Virginia partly offset the New York result as Gov. Richard J. Hughes won re election in New Jersey.

State aid checks sent to schools in Washington County

General state aid for the first half of the year was distributed to eligible districts in Washington County, with a total of 20,373,019.13 dollars claimed in Iowa. First-half funds amounted to 16,750,000 dollars and were prorated among districts. Specific amounts include Highland Community 15,074.44, Mid-Prairie Community 28,721.59, Washington Community 48,578.87, Clay Township 1,730.91, Pleasant Ridge Marion Twp 323.72, and other local districts listed with small curations. Congressman John R. Schmidhauser announced plans to meet Washington County residents on Friday, November 5, with a stop at the Washington town post office from 9:30 to noon, to discuss activities in Washington. He would also attend the Washington County Democratic Central Committee Meeting on November 4.

Walter G Ithrig of Kalona dies at 75

Walter G Ithrig 75 of Kalona died Tuesday evening in a Wellman nursing home. Funeral Friday 2 pm at Frytown Church of Christ with burial in Frytown cemetery. Raymond Lyon and Richard Yoder will officiate. Surviving are his wife Laura Powell, daughter Mrs Robert McGlumphrey of Kalona, two sons Francis Merle and Robert of Iowa City, 14 grandchildren, four sisters, three brothers. Burial at Petersheim Funeral Home prior to service.

Kiwanis Club elects Washington leader Robert Bates president

Robert Bates has been elected president of the Washington Kiwanis club for the coming year. Other officers include Bill Perdock as vice president Eldon Brake secretary and Bill Smart treasurer. Board members elected are Percy Holder Carlton Mangold Max Owens Joe Evanovich with holdovers Verne Knecht Gifford Morrison and Billy Arnold. Wendell Eden serves as immediate past president.

Driver Improvement Program offered by Farm Bureau Women

Washington County Farm Bureau Women sponsor an eight hour Driver Improvement Program to reduce Iowa highway deaths. Open to all 16 and older with a valid license, the courses run November 22 and 29 from 9 30 a m to 3 40 p m with a $1 registration fee due by November 17. Certified National Safety Council instructors cover accident preventability defensive driving six positions of a two car crash improving driving safety and related topics. Rites at Wayland for Mrs. Watson

Funeral services for Mrs. Sherman Watson Sr. will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Wayland Methodist Church with Rev. Delbert Perry presiding. Burial follows in North Hill Cemetery. Died at her Wayland home this week she was married to Dr. S B Watson Sr. who died in 1960. Pickup Crash Kills West Chester Man Near Wellman

According to the Washington County Sheriff's office a pickup truck driven by Charles Thrapp 68 of rural West Chester struck a cement bridge five miles south of Wellman at 545 p m Tuesday Thrapp was taken to University Hospital in Iowa City. The pickup was a total loss.

Iowa Municipal Elections Show Wide Turnout Across Cities

Contests drew strong voter participation in Iowa on Tuesday as incumbents lost races in Davenport Ottumwa and Atlantic while a three way race in Camanche produced a tie leading to a drawing plan. Davenport saw John Jabens defeat Mayor Ray T. O'Brien, Ottumwa re elected Safe Dupy over Gordon Bennett, and Atlantic mayor Howard Lundberg defeated. Municipal votes also rose in La Porte City Clinton Marengo Lenox Carter Lake Windsor Heights and other communities with several incumbents re elected and new council members chosen.

Washington YMCA Receives Merit Award in Madison

The Washington YMCA earned a Merit Award from the North Central Area of YMCAs Health and Physical Education Conference in Madison Wisconsin. YWCA Moves to Old Junior High Site

YWCA now operates from the former Junior High at 404 West Main after a move completed last week with 16 volunteers scrubbing painting packing and organizing. Over 1 400 women and girls used VW activities in October and all programs continue at the new address except for swim classes ending November 12.
