A 90 pound Explorer VIII satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral atop a Juno II rocket at 12 24 a m EST to probe the ionosphere and its impact on long range radio and television signals. NASA noted the orbiter carries eight experiments to map ion concentration temperature and micrometeorite effects in a 112 minute orbit between 215 and 1450 miles.

Road funds spent in counties show varied allocations
The Highway Commission reports total road expenditures for the year ending June 30 196. Washington County received 547 082 for primary roads and 275 281 for farm to market roads. The Iowa Highway Commission’s annual report shows 1959 60 expenditures of 97 599 700 for interstate and primary roads and farm to market systems with 68 601 990 in federal aid.
