City Deliberates Street Name Changes and Public Hearing
Washington City Council reviewed a list of proposed street name changes aimed at standardizing naming patterns in southeast neighborhoods. A public hearing is set for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 22 with the Plan and Zoning Commission, following tentative approval by the commission and an ad hoc citizens group chaired by Mayor Harold Johnson. The changes affect about a dozen streets labeled by developers with personal or unorthodox names, including East Harrison Street becoming East Taylor Street and Harrison becoming Pam Street. The council also discussed junk car storage on a private northwest lot leased for 25 a month, noting minimal progress on a removal campaign, and repealed ordinance 513 establishing a city police reserve. Public Works noted salt prices rising to 17.42 per ton under a new Diamond Crystal contract, with annual usage around 120 tons, down from 40 tons last year due to mild winter.
