A large reception in Louisville drew numerous attendees as host Hoover welcomed guests and announced upcoming community events. The event featured local leaders and addressed neighborhood concerns, signaling continued civic engagement.
On a Louisville stop Hoover greeted by crowds as his special train rolled toward California. He praised seven and a half years of progress under his administration, stressing prosperity and peace and warning against critique from Governor Smith.
Charles Smith, New York atheist jailed for opposing Arkansas antiatheism law, was released from the city hospital after an unidentified benefactor paid his fine. Smith refused to leave and, aided by his attorneys, sought to remain imprisoned to test the law. He had begun a hunger strike after his arrest for circulating antiatheist literature.
Senator Charles Curtis addressed about 4,000 people in Des Moines last night, condemning Governor Smith's immigration stance and tariff views. He argued Republican administrations posted surpluses since 1920 while accusing Democratic leaders of lax fiscal policy. Curtis departed for Moberly, Maine this morning after a tense rally.
Major Dent Atkinson of New York will deliver a Republican address in the Washington High School auditorium tonight. Glenn Mace, chairman of the county Republican campaign committee, will preside as organizers arrange for Atkinson to be introduced to the platform. The event aims to boost Hoover in the current campaign.
County auditor J. T. Mathews died at nine this morning at his sister’s home after a long illness. He had served as district court clerk and hospital board member and was a former Monmouth College alumnus and teacher. He leaves two sons and siblings in the area. Funeral plans were set for the coming days.
Washington High school plans to entrain eighteen players for a fourth Little Six game against Burlington. Captain Bain leads a determined squad facing a tough away matchup in muddy conditions. It covers blocks on South Iowa West Vill Buren South Avenue B and Hawt and aims to improve the south town sewer system. Faith Schoonover a 19 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Schoonver suffered head injuries from an accident near Washington yesterday afternoon. Everett Cance was the driver but the father said no blame. The county rally torch light parade has been moved to Monday evening due to rain. Major Dent Atkinson of New York will speak at three o clock in the high school.
Oliver Bricker, 50, once a prosperous farmer from Yell township, was confined at the Anamosa reformatory for the criminally insane after years of arson fear. Bricker fired in a woodland area and terrorized neighbors as farmers and families lived in fear. arson charges were overturned on appeal earlier.
K Morris of Davenport saw the shortest district court jury trial yesterday, lasting 26 minutes. The case ended with a verdict after the jury was seated quickly, but the defendant was not found by an agent without a search warrant, and an appeal was filed immediately.
Senator Brookhart of Iowa said Senator Norris erred in backing the Democratic ticket. He voiced discomfort with Norris allying with Hoover, signaling further alignment with other Progressive senators and questioning Norris's stance in recent remarks.
Snowstorms swept south from the Rocky Mountain region into Nebraska and Kansas last night, bringing up to a foot of snow in areas. The blizzard spread east toward Missouri and Arkansas, with forecasts of more snow and cold temperatures across surrounding states.

Funeral services for Mrs. James A Work will be held Sunday at the Work residence in Washington. Burial follows at Elm Grove cemetery. She was born April 1 1862 in Monmouth Illinois and died yesterday at her daughter’s home in Rochester New York. She lived much of her life in Washington and was active in the Methodist church and its societies. Her husband James A Work died earlier and three children were born to them Florence who died young and survives Mrs W J M Scott of Rochester and James Aiken of New Haven. She leaves a sister and mother in Washington and a brother in Peoria Illinois. The body lies in Washington with arrangements by Mrs Leo with the body to be laid out Saturday evening.
The Republican County Central Committee will meet on Saturday November 3 1228 at 2 PM in the courthouse to fill the vacancy on the Republican ticket for county auditor caused by the death of primary nominee Matthews ACK chairman. Repu Princeton Ohio State. WIZ networks CST Democratic Rally. Friends of Mrs Max Kurtz report her health improving after an operation at Mercer Hospital Cedar Rapids.
