Large crowds attended the annual Halloween events at the YMCA in Washington. About 375 grade school children joined a supervised party, 150 junior high pupils played games in the Y community room, and over 150 high school students joined festivities, with little reported damage.
Washington County voters away from their precincts on Election Day may cast absentee ballots in the county auditor's office at the courthouse. Auditor Fred E. Bourgeois notes it's late for mailed ballots to count but urges those unable to reach polls to vote in person. The drive to increase turnout is strong with 341 regular ballots and 68 for armed forces issued so far.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce retail committee voiced support for a trade area survey to aid retailers and local business groups. The survey, likely to begin in early 1957, aims to provide valuable tabulated results for the town and industries. Members urged objections to Milwaukee railroad's plan to end passenger train service.

More than 30 area high school students from several churches joined the Halloween UNICEF porchlight campaign in Washington Council of Churches. They collected $96.79 to aid UNICEF with funds turning into vaccines medicine and milk for children in underdeveloped areas. Ed Hutchcroft chaired the event with Rev Don Frank and Dick Thompson assisting.
Washington County residents will vote Tuesday November 6 on a 75000 bond issue to build a new county jail. Grand jurors condemned the existing jail citing cracks in the west wall and damage to the cell block, with contractors saying major repairs are needed to the heavy steel door.
The White House outlined efforts to localize and end hostilities in the Middle East while considering options to honor the 1950 pledge to aid victims of aggression. The Public Health Service unveiled a multi million dollar program through the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness to spend over 1 million dollars yearly for 10 to 20 years on cerebral palsy mental retardation and related conditions. Yale and Brown received more than 700000 for a four year study as start. Over 6000 people will be followed by hospitals and researchers to find prenatal natal and postnatal patterns linked to these conditions.
Charles Sydney Gookin 83 a lifelong resident of Ainsworth and Columbus Junction died at 1 a.m. in Oakdale Sanitarium after several years of illness. Funeral services set for Saturday November 3 at 2 p.m. at Jones funeral home with Rev. C E McPherson. burial in Ainsworth Cemetery. Born May 24 1874 in Jonesboro Tennessee he was a farmer and Methodist Church member. Survived by brother CB Gookin Waterville Minnesota two sisters Mrs J M Clegg Iowa City and Mrs Georgia Williams Davenport plus several nieces and nephews.
Rear Admiral George Dufek became the first person to land by plane at the South Pole. He landed from McMurdo Sound in Antarctica, staying 45 minutes at the pole before returning. Previous Pole visits were by foot, Roald Amundsen in 1911 and Robert F. Scott, who died on return.
Crawfordsville residents involved in separate crashes reported today. Kenneth Cherryholmes, Fletcher Motor Co. mechanic, had his left index and middle fingers crushed when a 1 000 pound unit fell from a crawler tractor on Max Owen farm. He was taken to Mercy Hospital Iowa City for surgery. Dorothy Coakley, daughter of Mr and Mrs Orville Coakley, admitted to Memorial Hospital Mt Pleasant after an auto wreck on Highway 34 near Rome left of Mt Pleasant. She suffered a fractured vertebrae and hip, with a deep knee laceration.
