Memorial day observances in St. Ansgar Iowa honored two remaining veterans Edward Haskins 99 from the Civil War and J R Baggs from the Spanish American War. School Supt H F Risse led the tribute praising the two men for their service.
Cedar Rapids reports the first fishing season accident when Don Ahgren, 656, was taken to a hospital after a fish hook caught in the lower tissue of his right eye during his father’s cast. His sight is not impaired.
Burlington officials announced a July 1 start date for a 1 percent monthly penalty on delinquent old age pension tax. The tax will be assessed against property.
Professor George W. Martin of the University of Iowa will collect botanical specimens in partly submerged jungles of the Canal Zone and mountainous areas of Panama and northern Colombia this summer. He sails June 15 and returns early September.
Thieves stole 20 dozen red carnations from J. Sizer a Memorial Day incident at his Audubon home garden.
Storm Lake reports missing farmer George Freeman Newell Jr last Friday after he went to a nearby farm to shell corn and did not return. No trace has been found and search efforts continue for the Newell family and local authorities.
Burlington observer notes a single Civil War veteran, Edmund B.R. Davis, 91, rode in a parade. Davis enlisted in 1862 and marched with General Sherman to the sea, serving in the 25th Iowa Infantry, Company E.
Decorah college for women affiliated with Luther College will graduate its first class next week. Founded in 1922, affiliated with Luther in 1943, the school was accredited by the North Central Association in April this year.

In Long Branch Ontario on May 31 five Scott children aged 18 months to 12 perished when a stove exploded and turned their home into a blaze. Parents Mrs and Mr Scott and one child escaped after the father broke a second floor window to lower his wife and child to safety and then jumped to the ground.
Miss Leta Glenn and Mrs. John Beamer report the death of Martha Glenn Kanause, a Minden resident born at the Glenn home and educated at Glendale school and Washington academy. She died Sunday after a ten month illness. funeral in Michigan. She was the last survivor of the academy class of 1882.

Mickey Wanello a suspect in the North Ked grocery cash register burglary fled as police closed in. He leaped from his car swam the creek and disappeared into the woods. Lester Walsinger, with Mickey just before the robbery, is in custody.

Garagemen from towns within thirty to forty miles attended the dealer clinic at Ross Motor Service on Wednesday evening. The session covered frame and axle straightening and wheel rebuilding, with Jack Coakley of Rear Manufacturing Co of Rock Island assisting. Food was served. about forty dealers attended. New equipment at Ross, rare in the state, highlighted the event.
M L Hutton of Ames, acting director of the conservation commission, was appointed by Governor Herring as superintendent of the new state conservation commission. Born in Washington County, he graduated Columbus Junction high school in 1995, attended Iowa State College, with a $4,000 salary and an indefinite term. The post was created by the 46th General Assembly merging the high and game commission and boards of conservation and forestry.
Corning district court jury fixed to try Page Hawthorne Adams County Farm Holiday association leader on aiding sale of mortgaged property was dismissed. Hawthorne allegedly assisted George Richards in selling 300 dollars worth of Hvestoeck. Rien ards was paroled after being found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison.

He says $120000 in feed savings and about $235000 extra income from infertile eggs due to more laying hens over June to September, boosting summer earnings.
