Four Die As Fire Destroys Algona Hotel
A late Saturday blaze gutted the Hotel Laing in Algona killing four residents aged 64 to 76. Investigators ruled out arson negligence and faulty wiring, saying the fire started near a door in a storage area under a stairway. The Victorian three story building, moved here 50 years ago, faced demolition after the loss. Insurance covered part of the roughly $30,000 damage as volunteers fought the flames.

College Coed Slain At Graduation Dance
Marianna Hatch a 21 year old Los Angeles City College student and Emil Daruty 22 a Pacific State University engineering student dated over three years. After a breakup they met at a graduation party where a fight led to Hatch being found dead in a fish pond. Daruty confessed saying he flipped and choked her. He was arrested after fleeing to his brother’s home. Hatch was due to graduate in two weeks with a dental technician certificate.

A 13 year old Columbus Junction youth, Paul Kerr, was hit in the eye by a B B pellet about 1 PM Sunday. The pellet was fired from a gun held by David Crooks 3, of near Columbus City. The boy was taken to Muscatine General Hospital in fair condition.

Two Seriously Hurt In Junction Crash
A Silvis Illinois couple, William Barton age 22 and his wife Sue 19, sustained serious injuries when their motorcycle pulled from a Columbus Junction service station into a oncoming car on highway 92. Driver Leonard Cecil of St Ansgar and his family were uninjured. The crash occurred about 4 p.m. as the group returned from a Lake Darling trip. The Bartons were transported to Muscatine General Hospital.
