In Inglewood California two burglars removed their shoes before entering an auto agency early Tuesday. They fled when sirens and red lights approached, mistaking the scene for police. Instead three screaming fire engines answered the alarm.
The Senate passed a 37 billion highway bill after 13 hours of debate. A conference with the House will resolve differences on interstate funding and wage provisions. The measure aims for a 13 year buildout with pay as you go constraints and a 25 billion interstate network allocation by population and mileage factors.
Rev Harley C Gelhaus pastor of St Pauls Evangelical and Reformed Church takes a year leave to supervise a 100 bed hospital project at Adidome Gold Coast West Africa funded by the Gold Coast government. He will depart around August 1 with son Boyd. during absence Orval Willmann will serve starting Sept 1.
Arab states united to block a British resolution seeking Hammarskjold to keep his good offices in the Holy Land. Syria and Lebanon oppose the measure, while Egypt shows little opposition. Iran indicated possible amendments to the resolution.
Florida's Democratic primary returns show Adlai E. Stevenson winning 216,937 votes to Estes Kefauver's 207,249 across 1,731 of 1,779 precincts for 22 of 28 national convention votes. In the Republican primary Eisenhower leads Knowland with 36,076 to 1,842 from 1,219 of 1,799 precincts.
United Steelworkers Union moves from individual Pittsburgh meetings to joint contract talks in New York with US Steel Bethlehem and Republic Steel. The 650000 union members face a June 30 contract expiry covering 172 firms. McDonald calls the sessions a sizable task to speed settlements before the strike deadline.
Thomas Michael Carter 70 retired farmer of Brighton Iowa died Tuesday afternoon at Washington County Hospital after a period of ill health. Funeral services will be held at Hoskins Funeral Home in Brighton Friday at 2 pm with burial in Ollie Cemetery. He was born Oct 5 1875 in Ottumwa son of Mathias and Jane Carter. Survived by wife Alice Corpron, one son Harley, two daughters Verida Cummings and Agnes Kiesey, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and sisters Dora Northup and Artie Coghlan. Preceded in death by son Edward infant Floyd and three sisters.
The Committee of Christian Education of the City Council of Churches announces two week vacation church schools in participating churches starting Monday June 3. Directors include Carol Forgey Baptist Church 9 11 and Mary Gale Letts First Presbyterian 9 11 15 with other churches offering 9 11 30 and 9 3 pm sessions.
Vatican sources report Pope Pius XII, aged 80, suspends all audiences until further notice due to fatigue. He attended a general audience but did not speak, with doctors ordering rest after a period of high activity and concern over Italian elections.
Washingtonians joined in ceremonies honoring war dead with flag raising at the post office and a Navy Memorial service at Crooked Creek bridge. The Municipal Band played in Central Park and parades moved to cemeteries Elm Grove and Woodlawn where Harold Jarvis and Ed Hutchcroft spoke. Navy speaker E. D. Morrison saluted sailors with a tribute to those who “went down to sea.”
Traffic deaths totaled 29 by mid morning Tuesday including 26 fatalities and two drownings. Illinois reported the worst, with five killed in two crashes near Litchfield and Streator. Four teens died near Abbeville Louisiana after a car hit a culvert. Weather storms may have reduced travel activity as officials urge caution.
