A Washington group, including church and business representatives, met Iowa Liquor Commission members in Des Moines and urged abandoning the Washington store plan. They cited a 2,116 signature petition and argued most county residents favor prohibition, but the commission said it would proceed with the store planned to open after June 1.

John G Bauer 87 died at 12 15 a m today May 29 1958 at his home 1104 East Third Street after four years illness. Funeral rites set for Saturday 3 30 p m at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Walter C Johannes in charge. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. He born Sept 18 1870 in Württemberg Germany son of Michael and Margaret Kern Bauer came to United States at 21 and to Washington in 1948 from Wellman where he lived 45 years. He married Eva Barbara Hoesch July 2 1893 in Pittsburgh. A cabinet maker and carpenter he belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife seven children 17 grandchildren 10 great grandchildren.
