A 72-year-old Frankfurt woman told police Tuesday a burglar took her gold crowned false teeth and left behind his own cheaper set in what she called an unfair trade.
Washington reports Secretary Ezra Benson urged new price support drafts allowing zero to ninety percent parity for basic crops. Senator Milton Young criticized the move as partisan and harmful to farmers, while Benson defended eight guiding criteria and asked quick action on cotton and wheat measures.
The Washington Saddle Club will host the Southeastern Trail Riders Association at Hill Top Ranch near the youth center at Lake Darling on Sunday June 2. The morning ride starts at 10 o clock and about 140 horses are expected. An afternoon show with ten classes begins at 1 with judge Russel Harding of Marshalltown. Admission is free and the public is invited.
The Har ry Barker Detachment Marine Corps League met Tuesday evening. Members voted to contribute $1 per member to the Little League Baseball Fund and heard final plans for Memorial Day. The group noted it is the only active Marine League Detachment in Iowa, founded in 1946 in Washington.
Graveside services were held for Cynthia Annette Kongable, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Kongable, in Winfield cemetery. She was born May 23 at Memorial Hospital in Mt. Pleasant and died Friday morning. Mrs. Kongable was formerly Sandra Bauer, daughter of Eldin Bauer of West Chester.
Ames Iowa UP Emory Loomis Waterloo Highway Commissioner says he has been crucified by the press in stories about a Waterloo land sale to the Iowa Highway Commission. The commission defers action on a second Prentice sale and on the Hardin County condemnation awards while checking for potential conflicts.
Mrs. Katie Johnson, 86, died 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ingwersen Nursing Home in Wayland. Funeral 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Zehr Funeral Home. burial Finley Cemetery. Born July 29, 1870 near Wayland to Christian and Elizabeth Miller Kauffman. Survived by one sister Mrs. Will Allen and brothers Homer and Will Kauffman.
Bing Miller was named president of the Washington Junior Chamber of Commerce at the regular election. Officers for the coming year include Dale Batterson as first vice president Leo Beauchamp as second vice president Elmer Doak as third vice president Wayne Davis as secretary Everett Miller as treasurer. Board members named for two year terms are Jim Harris Bob Ross Harry Levy Ralph Curl and Bob Nardy. Ellsworth Meredith Leon Hillman and Jack Tanner hold one year terms while Sam Young and Dick Ross return for another year.
Ninety one eighth grade students at Washington Junior High School are listed as the graduating class for the term. The eligible group includes 51 boys and 40 girls such as Gary Akerman Dean Bailey Gary Bennett Lynn Blanchard Richard Booth Steven Booth and James Carey as next year entrants to high school.
Fourteen men gathered at Ted Givans farm on Monday and planted fifty acres of corn for him. Included were Odd Fellows, neighbors, and members of St. Pauls Evangelical and Reformed church. The work finished by 3 p.m. and church guild women served lunch. Mr. Givans is recuperating from a heart attack suffered April 1.
Ninety five graduates of Washington High School were honored at the 87th commencement in the new school gymnasium. Dr Clyde Parker urged students to pursue ongoing growth and to understand freedom under law while planning for community involvement and education. Scholarships were awarded to Karen Swanson and Betty McBee for character, industry, and progress.
A large crowd of Washington High School seniors attended a YMCA party after commencement sponsored by the H Y boys. They danced swam played ping pong and badminton well into the night to avoid highway travel. Mothers and fathers served as chaperones and refreshments were provided until 4 30 a m.
State Senator Carl T. Anderson and Representative Dick Stephens spoke at the Washington Y's Men's Club meeting Tuesday evening. They outlined legislative work for the current session and described problems facing the group.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles pressed for quick movement in East West disarmament negotiations with Russia saying progress is essential to prevent stalls and enable deals on related political issues. He noted a first stage accord would take months and Germany's role hinges on European decisions led by Adenauer.
The U S Bureau of Roads approved three interstate bridges across the Mississippi in the Davenport area. The Iowa Highway Commission favors moving the Rock River crossing to Muscatine pending federal approval. Illinois would consider the transfer if allowed.
Chicago report details Jesse L. Sherrill's 3 to 10 year sentence for assault to kill after his wife Estelle Sherrill lay paralyzed and near death for months. Daughter Dorothy testified the February beating occurred during a drunken rage. Authorities said she may die, prompting possible murder charges.
Mrs. Mary McConahay 8681 died Tuesday at her daughter’s home five miles southeast of here. Born November 28 1875 in Cairola she wed William S McConahay December 23 1895. Survived by three sons Jesse William Columbus City Russell Wapello a daughter Mrs Wykert 11 grandchildren 14 great grandchildren. Funeral 2 30 p m Thursday at Stacy Funeral Home.
Mrs. Ira L. Miksch 73 died earlier today in Washington County Hospital after two years of declining health. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Sherman's Funeral Home with Rev. Milan Thompson officiating. burial at Elm Grove Cemetery. Survivors include husband Ira L. Miksch four sons Robert David Lawrence and Lloyd two daughters Beulah Miksch Miriam Nichols 14 grandchildren a brother Maurice Jones a sister Mrs. Walter Brown and several deceased brothers. The family resides in Grace Hill community.
Washington ministers group set two week schedules for church based Bible schools starting June 3 to 14 at Baptist Christian and Presbyterian churches. Methodist and United Presbyterian run June 10 to 21, Evangelical Reformed conducts June 10 to 14. Children urged to attend.
Dr. Harry C. McKown, nationally known educator and author, will speak at the Washington Chamber of Commerce dinner June 6 at the Country Club. Tickets are on sale. reservations encouraged. The Gilson Ill. resident is noted for serious thought and humor and has contributed to School Activities magazine and U S education work in Germany 1950 51.
Three Iowa Highway Commission employees testified at a public hearing that the 7.6 acre Waterloo land purchase for 22799 dollars occurred under unusual circumstances. Witnesses John Butter Robert C Boyd and W D Johnston provided details while Mrs Grace Helsel the seller attended the session.
