Hundred County Pupils Receive Diplomas in County Commencement

One hundred boys and girls completed rural schooling and received diplomas at a countywide ceremony in the Methodist church. County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill presided, with Dr. W. J. Peterson of the university delivering the address and 15 honor students named prior to diplomas being distributed.

Deaths Increase On Highways of U S This Year

Chicago reports the National Safety Council says last month saw 2 650 traffic deaths, 47 percent above April 1945 and just above April 1941. Officials warn that about 38 000 Americans will die in traffic this year unless driving habits improve. They call the nation drunk on gasoline and urge immediate restraint to protect wartime gains. The four month totals for 1945 show 7 420 deaths vs 10 770 in 1941, nearing the record.

Rites Planned for 19 Year Old Killed Under Tractor

Donald Nauman, 19, died in Floyd Iowa after a tractor overturned while he was grading top soil at a Cedar River gravel pit. Final rites were being planned in Floyd.

Nettie F. Davis, 72, Dies at Home in Washington

Nettie Florence Davis died at 1 15 PM at her home 515 West Washington Street after a year of poor health and a three week illness. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 30 PM at L A Jones funeral home with Rev W Allen of Bethel Presbyterian Church officiating. A longtime schoolteacher and active church member, she was born May 2 1874 in Jackson township, daughter of James and Sarah Ann Davis, and lived in Washington since 1943. She leaves one sister.

Karlsson Named Physician and Boys' Secretary at Y M C A

Rolfe Karlsson, formerly active in Cornell athletics, will serve as physical director and boys work secretary at the Washington Y M C A, starting June 5. A Rockford native with Army service and overseas theater experience, he brings football wrestling and swimming background and Boy Scout work to the post.

The United Mine Workers wage policy committee reportedly ratified a contract with the government to restart coal production in federally operated pits. Officials expected a White House announcement, with Sen. Lucas predicting 3 p.m. EST, as John L. Lewis and J A Krug moved toward final terms for 490 000 miners.

Life of George W Moberly of Trenton Honored

31, 1870 at Trenton Missouri a son of George W and Margaret Moberly. He married June 23 1938 at Marshalltown to Mrs Margaret Ledgerwood. He lived in Washington for eight years. He was a Christian and served in the regular army as a young man. Surviving are his wife a son O B Moberly of St Joseph and a step son Sidney Carson of Davenport.
