Des Moines reports a special audit of the state motor vehicle department reveals a cashier's shortage of 4377.50 dollars. State Auditor Charles W. Storms announced the finding and outlined next steps.
Mrs Emily Benorr of Nashua aged woman fell from a second story window four miles northwest of town. She suffered shock from the fall but no bones were broken. She is at her home with her son Henry Benorr and growing weaker from the incident.
Funeral rites are set at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gerry for their seven week old daughter Mary Louise who was smothered in her crib. The infant reportedly pulled clothing over her face while tossing about between midnight and 5 am.
A letter started 41 years ago by 17 members of Eureka College 1894 class in Eureka Illinois is still making rounds. Dr L F Newcomer mailed it and it now travels among the 14 living classmates with about six months to reach each participant.
The body of 67 year old Gus Reichmann was discovered after relatives unearthed liberty bonds buried beneath the front porch at his Reichmann home. The bonds, valued at $15, were left by Richmann weeks before his death in Toledo.
A Waterloo resident reports a lilac bush about 20 years old blooming directly from the root rather than the top. Mrs. L. R. Welch described the plant as resembling hyacinth with blooms near the foot of the shrub away from the main trunk.
Ottumwa youths Don Newell track coach at Ottumwa High School and John and Kenneth Beebe will depart Ottumwa June 23 to ride bicycles to Colorado and back. They aim to complete the trip as a group of Rover boys with plans for the journey and return.
Davenport hosts a testimonial dinner honoring E H Mulock with Gov Clyde J L Herr ing among about two hundred representatives and officials. Mulock chairs the lowe emerciency relief committee and is praised for service at the event.
Municipal Judge John Blancher of Cornell Bluffs sent barbers John Cross aged 29 and Don Jordan aged 50 to jail for five days on intoxication charges. He ordered Cross to take his barber tools to jail and suggested Jordan spend time out with a fine as a substitute.
Cedar Falls police arrested Waterloo suspects A Sullivan 35 and EB BK Stafford 39 for investigation. They were confined in the county jail after officers found about 394 dollars worth of dental gold and equipment in their possession.
The three sons of Dr. Thomas Poulter Howard Glenn and Louie arrived in Mt Pleasant from Chicago after a long journey from New Zealand. Their first stop was a haircut from barber Ching Daniels followed by a big dinner of American hot dogs and strawberries and ice cream in a welcome home scene.
Washington prepares for Memorial Day with a morning parade to Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries, grave decorations by students, and memorial addresses by Richard McCleery and Theodore Bailey. Mrs. Mary Catherine Beenblossom 71, wife of Calvin Beenblossom, died suddenly at her home southeast of town. Funeral set for Friday at L. A. Jones Funeral Home with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Survived by husband, five children, ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and several siblings. She was a longtime member of the Washington Methodist Church.
Secretary Leigh Soule of the Y M C A announces the Sun Building will be closed forenoon Memorial Day but will open at one o'clock for the rest of the day.
Judge DD W Hamilton adjourned district court for Memorial Day and will resume the term Friday morning. Yesterdays session heard the foreclosure case Union Central Life Insurance Co versus Lyle.
Nine members of Leon Beatty post drum corps will travel to Iowa City for a 9 to 9 30 broadcast on WSUI at the university. The Iowa City Legion post will run the half hour devoted to the G A R with Washington volunteers assisting. The group will perform old time pieces on drums and fifes without bugles. Names listed include Don Radda Don Paul Ted Crone Percy Richardson Harold Teets Clark Pulver Rodney Arnold Maynard Brown Victor Crone and Maynard Brown.
Miss Gertrude Morrison has been elected by the board of education as instructor in biology for the junior college, with duties in chemistry and English. She holds a master's from the State University of Iowa and a degree from Central College Fayette Missouri, with teaching experience at Central College and Harlan Iowa. The board still seeks two replacements, Mrs Williams and Miss DeLonge, for upcoming vacancies.
Washington gardens reach peak condition as Fortnightly Club garden department marks ongoing Garden Visiting Days. A hawthorn tree planted near the Sunset Park pool is noted among the fresh plantings witnessed by visitors.
A car driven by Mrs. W H Morgan of Iowa City collided with a stalled beer truck on Highway 161 three miles south of Crawfordsville. The truck, owned by Joseph Jansen of West Point, had a wheel loss and occupied most of the pavement. No serious injuries. the truck driver had reportedly placed flares, but they burned out due to fuel issues.
G F Augustine, a prominent farmer from White Oak community, fractured both bones of a leg when a board broke as he fell about three feet in the granary. He was taken to Washington county hospital for care and x rays, expected to stay several days.
The county auditor announces that the court house offices will be closed tomorrow in observance of Memorial Day. The closure affects county operations and public services during the holiday.
Sioux City May 29 Clordon C Haller a former police chief and national guard leader has become public safety commissioner to replace Honey C Kuhlmann who resigned amid ouster charges. Haller defeated last year by Kuhlmann who quit while witnesses implicated him in a slot machine protection ring.
