Berlin reports major Allied defense and German gains in the Vesle sector amid a broader Aisne offensive. French and British forces claim to have halted the breakthrough while Berlin cites captured towns and heavy enemy losses as the line shifts near Soissons and Reims.
Congressional leaders from both parties plan a June 1 recess until August 1 after appropriation bills. The House Ways and Means Committee will work on the new revenue bill with passage targeted between August 1 and August 10. A 30 day House recess would follow until Senate action.
In Picardy on May 29 American troops attacked a one and a quarter mile front, seized the village of Cantigny, took 200 prisoners, and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy while sustaining relatively small American casualties. Hostile counterattacks were repulsed as Allied air activity continued.
London May 28 The registrar of labor George H Roberts said in Smethwick that 400000 discharged soldiers had been provided for already 60 percent have returned to their old employers and the demobilization problem was being addressed.

House leader Claude Kitchin charged that great publishers push a revenue bill to repeal the postal tax from last session. He warned he would not aid the publishers and denounced a powerful lobbying presence in Washington hotels. The speech linked editor Johnson of Washington to notification of the press influence.
